you prechecked the tables and they're suppose to be moving anytime now, it's the perfect time of morning, you got up early and got in the stand before dark, everything is perfect, the birds are starting to sing, a rabbit just made it's entrance into the field, the wind is perfect you didn't make a noise coming in, didn't step on a branch or clang your bow against the stand and didn't drop your flashlight and let it bang down every step or forget anything in the truck, nature isn't calling for your morning ritualistic meeting on the throne, your starting to hear a little movement and the next thing you know 3 stray dogs come romping down the trail and run around the green field for 5 or 10 minutes, up and down all three roads that enter the field and get on the scent of something bark their heads off and run down the trail after it.
The first time, your ticked and you hope they'll somehow drive a deer toward you but it never happens. What do you do when this happens for the 2nd or 3rd time?
I'm not the kind of guy that would kill these pests but are there any type of tips or broadhead that will pop the dogs without penetrating it's skin? I swear I was close to taking my broadhead off and shooting just an arrow at about half draw but I chickened out that I would hurt the dumb brute. What would you do?

Are we talking 3 times in one hunt, or 3 different hunts? Hell, either way, I would have shot them if they are stray.

3 times over 5 or 6 hunts. I'm assuming they're stray. there aren't houses within a few miles either way. People are notorious for dropping dogs near there. Even if they are stray, I wouldn'twant to mame or kill them. just scare the pee out of them so they won't come back but not make a ton of noise in the process. Wouldn't you condisder that hunt pretty much wasted at that point? I stayed out there a little longer but nothing came through. it felt better blaming it on the dogs anyway!

I think most of us would shoot them. Its tough to not feel like they ruined a hunt. After all the work that goes into deer hunting, you/we want everything to be perfect every hunt.... Sounds like they are gonna stay in the area. Ya either got to kill 'em...or take 'em home. SSS would be my choice.

I know they make some rubber bludgeon tips meant for small game. Aim for a meaty muscle so that there is lower risk of impact injury, and so that you don't kill or maim by hitting it in the head. I imagine it would hurt like hell, but wouldn't think it would do any real damage. For some dogs, it is nothing to roam over several miles from their home in the course of a day.

There were a dozen or more strays seen on our club last year, but 6 didn't make it!

Make sure you kill the lead dog first and the others will come back to investigate.

I like the bb gun idea. I wouldn't mind it penetrating it's hide because I know a shot to the butt with a bb gun won't kill it!

Shoot - shovel - shut up. If those dogs are strays they need to be taken out. Nothing worse than a pack of wild dogs. That's probably the only thing that I actually fear running into in the woods. I was once charged by a pack of 4. Luckily I had a rifle with me. Dropped 2 of them and wounded a third. The lead dog fell about 20ft. from me. If I see a dog without a collar on my lease it's bad news for him.

If they don't have a collar, they they are wild dogs. imo...Don't give them a chance to attack you on the way back to the truck...

I wont shoot every dog without a collar. It's more of a judgement call. If the dog is skinny and ratty looking then it is a stray and i will put it down. But if the dog is health and has a nice coat i will either let it walk or climb down and see if its friendly. And if its not friendly i put it down with the trusty sig on my hip.

Had the same scenario a few years back on a piece of property. We always were seeing some stray dogs, and some big uns. A friend of mine and myself discussed what the ethical thing to do would be, and finally, one day during gun season, the dogs made the decision for us. My buddy was sitting on one greenfield and heard a heck of a ruckus with all types of whailing coming through the woods; he got down to investigate and found a pack of 4 dogs mauling a yearling deer. Safety off and dogpile em; one got away and came my way; I already knew what to do. Having somebody's pet come by with its collar on and wagging its tail can happen to any of us; a pack of dogs hunting deer wildly is another issue.
