My buddy told me that radio is a bit slow for scanning. If you can load some channels that you want to check, you may have a better experience. It's really not meant to be a scanner, but it can do it. There's some software out there to assist you with programming as well. I've never used it but perhaps you could build a code-plug on your PC or laptop and then load it into the radio to prevent you from spending a ton of time using the radios GUI.
