We have very loose rules. Most of us say our rule is 16 inch spread with 8 points. If somebody shoots one smaller then it is ok but they might get some friendly/sarcastic ribbing. I'd say 75% of us will pass on younger deer if we have time but sometimes you just can't get a great look at one.
Out of the 6 of us that bow hunt hard we will shoot anything over 140 but will also shoot older bucks that are under. During rifle season is when the 16 inch wide 8 pointer rule is really used but it just leads to taking out the best of the 2.5 yr old deer. So, it is probably kind of silly anyway.

It's a lot better than it used to be in my opinion. Most hunters at large are more conservation minded and less motivated to kill 10 spikes a year with the management laws currently in place. I can remember when you could kill a buck a day all season long. Then in the 90's you could kill a buck and and depending on the county 2 does per day. ( been awhile but it seems like that's what it was ). I knew idiots that killed 30-40 deer per year just because they could.

Corn and cameras has been devestating in a lot of areas. Entire age classes are being removed and no amount of trigger restraint from even large properties can stop it. Deer have large Home ranges and they’re getting smoked on adjoining properties. It’s quickly becoming increasingly more difficult to hold members when they have nothing to shoot year after year due to the actions of neighbors. I’ve seen it first hand. One neighbor not on board can ruin hunting for a lot of people around them. It’s just what it is. Yep and this will continue to cause hunting lease prices to climb. On average those clubs hunting mature deer pay 2 to 3 times (sometimes more) the club dues as those clubs that shoot indiscriminately. Generally they can better afford the rising costs and will often outbid poor neighbors in order to remove them from equation. Private land is different. If you’re surrounded by a bunch of folks that own 20-40 acres that insist on killing their 4-5 deer then you’re screwed. All these folks are well within their rights to do so but you’ll never manage deer under those situations.

We are all kinda like minded and want to kill nice bucks. We try not to shoot young deer but we have a couple newer deer hunters that have never killed many deer and they will shoot a good young buck and the smile on their face says it all. Hard to be mad at them. We just explain that if they would give it another year or 2 it would be a much better buck. They are getting better but I will never fault a young hunter for killing a trophy in his eyes. It’s all about having fun and enjoying God’s creation. My rule on a shooter buck is if it makes me take a quick deep breath when I see it, I’m shooting at it.

A lot of these comments have reminded me why I’m not in a club anymore. I’ve been in clubs that did the rack measurement thing and have seen people fined for 1/4”. Pure ignorant. I’ve been in the 8 point or better club and seen 10” spreads brought in. Technically it’s within the rules but obviously not what the club intended. I’ve seen clubs where the president was responsible for aging when he wouldn’t have been able to look at his own driver’s license and tell you how old he himself was. I’ve seen the clubs that had photos of what is and what is not legal and those guidelines only applied to the bulk of the club but not the president and his cronies. I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt private land, owned by friends, for the last several years where we shoot what makes us happy. There are no rules for my younger boys as one has only killed one doe (first deer) and the other has yet to kill his first. My oldest son has killed a pile of deer and is holding out for a mountable buck. “Mountable buck” being at his discretion. I personally haven’t pulled the trigger in 5-6 years because I let the kids do the shooting now, but if I were to shoot one, it’d have to be as big, or bigger than the ones I already have mounted. We just have fun.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Not a club, but a lease with family.
We don't name deer. We don't run a ton of cameras (mostly because the stupid things stay broken). We keep it very simple: if it gets you excited and you want to kill it, kill it. My personal standards are higher than my dad... his are higher than my wife... and hers are higher than the kids. But with each kill, the wife and the kids become more selective.

Private land here. We do what we can with what we have. I’m gonna make sure our hunting is Fun and as productive as possible. Over the last 10-15 years or so, I’ve shot one buck for every 9-10 I’ve seen on average. I’ve lightened up on all the deer in general in hopes they grow or my kids get a chance at them. I don’t adhere to any certain rules. If I could kill 20-30 bucks a year and I only kill 2 or so, I think I’m doing my part and then some. Multiple hunts each year I see 3-4 bucks.

I think the main issue and reason why people shoot 90 inch 2.5 year old bucks is because the hunter knows if they don’t, then the next person signing in or down the street will. And that’s why age structure is terrible on a lot of properties. Too many people concerned about what everyone else is going to do. If everybody around has that mentality, then it’s a never ending cycle of death to young bucks. A little communication goes a long way and can help everybody. One of the most important things is to hunt with like minded people. It’s about the only way to keep hunting enjoyable. If you want to kill mature deer, then hunt with ppl who do the same. If you want to kill young deer then hunt with ppl who do the same. But you better have a lot of acres. One property can ruin a huge number of surrounding acres. We’re dealing with right now on multiple properties. Hunter’s get pissed when high fences go up but it’s because many folks are tired of pissing money away on trying grow deer top end AL deer just for their neighbor to high grade out the superstar 2 year olds year in and year out. High fencing is going to continue to explode in this state because of it. Our fence is going up this summer for this very reason. Im a shoot what makes you happy kind of guy, but neighbors not allowing us to be happy.

Deer did just fine without restrictions
They do just fine with them
They’ll be just fine either way. If you don’t like the rules where you hunt or around you then move on. There’s clubs for everybody.
Even meat clubs I know kill big deer every year.

9-11$ dollars a foot Predator wire adds 1.75$ a foot. Holy Schnikes, that a lot of cheddar to keep deer in the same place. I have many questions. 1. How do you keep the deer inside the fence while your building it? I am not being a smart ass I really have wondered how you keep them in while the fence is being built...or do you just stock the property once the fence is erected?

9-11$ dollars a foot Predator wire adds 1.75$ a foot. Is that just for the fence install after you have had the fence path cleared out.

A deer's first defense is to hid, not run. Most will not even get out of their bed. The ones that do, will not go far. You might loose a few during the process, but for the most part deer will just sit tight as you work all around them.
