My advice, keep all of his old tools if at all possible. My grandad died around 10 years ago and although I kept a fair amount of his tools, some of it I let go in the estate sale a few years back. As I have gotten more into woodworking over the last couple years, there are several older hand tools that I wish I kept but at the time had no use for.
It shouldn't be terribly difficult to DIY and watch YouTube videos to get you started. You won't get good overnight but you should be able to make a square piece of wood round pretty quickly. Also, make sure you are using sharp knives and start out with softer woods...cedar, poplar, even pine.
