I hunted a club for several years that was 2 out of 3: 8 point or better, 20” or better main beam or 4 year old or better.

Now I hunt a property where is mainly just me, but some of my family also hunts a little bit. I tell my family and any guests that we are shooting bucks you would put on the wall. Either European or shoulder mounts. This is different for different folks. If they’re happy with it, I’m happy with it. If it’s obvious that they were shooting to shoot then they aren’t invited back.

A good friend of mine it the nail on the head when he told me how he decides. If the first time you get a good look at a buck your first thought is SHOOT NOW!!!!! Then shoot it. If you start trying to convince yourself it’s big enough don’t shoot it because it probably is not.

Guys. Just so you know.....when I say Mature Buck, Mature Rack, that is exactly what I mean!! I don’t follow your ignorance. Just so you understand, guess how old a 5 year olds wrack will be??? That’s right D.A. 5 years!!!! I didn’t say anything about inches, you did. The point being is that if you shoot a mature buck, it should have a mature rack, if he doesn’t, who cares!!! You shot a mature buck!!!! Class is over, you guys go back to shooting your basket 2.5 yo. 10 points now!

You’ve made condescending remarks on here before, and say things that don’t make much sense every now and again. You probably shouldn’t get sideways every time somebody responds in disagreement with your virtue signaling.

I know a guy in a, if it's brown it's down club around Montgomery. I don't know why anyone would pay money for that?

I don't hunt clubs, but generally speaking, the best rule I have ever heard of or followed is simply requiring that any buck be mounted. It allows each hunter to have the individual freedom to determine what is a mountable buck in his eyes, while still, for the most part, allowing bucks on the property to reach mature ages. And of course if there is some mangled up old buck on camera that everyone agrees needs to be shot but wouldn't be worth mounting, then shoot it. I'd rather err on the side of letting hunters have stress free fun and an occasional young buck get killed than have to start stressing about whether a buck I want to shoot is going to get everyone mad at me because my scope can't perfectly measure an inside spread or test his jawbone for age.

Nobody knows how big the deer was when it’s on the wall in a shoulder mount or European mount.
Weight makes you feel good, but antlers are what people are looking for. IMO weight has no bearing.

Hmm. Interesting. Plenty of 5 year old bucks in Alabama that are 120”

Years ago I shot the oldest biggest buck in my hunting life in Macon county as an invited guest on a good buddies property. It barely made 110”. I was so proud and told him I was getting it mounted because it meant that much to me and he was proud for me. When we got the buck to skinning shed one of his leach buddies that stays up his ass during hunting season said, “I’d let that buck walk.” I told him good for him and to worry about his damn self. Was invited back the next season and shot another 5 yo that looked like what Shaw posted. Leach buddy decided to keep his mouth shut at the skinning shed that time.

I would much rather shoot this guy than a 130" 3 year old.

The truest thing I have read this deer season.

Crappy racked old deer are likely to stay that way.

I think the main issue and reason why people shoot 90 inch 2.5 year old bucks is because the hunter knows if they don’t, then the next person signing in or down the street will.

And that’s why age structure is terrible on a lot of properties. Too many people concerned about what everyone else is going to do. If everybody around has that mentality, then it’s a never ending cycle of death to young bucks. A little communication goes a long way and can help everybody.

One of the most important things is to hunt with like minded people. It’s about the only way to keep hunting enjoyable. If you want to kill mature deer, then hunt with ppl who do the same. If you want to kill young deer then hunt with ppl who do the same.

That mentality right there is why most of Alabama’s deer herd is “high graded” year after year with the best, genetically superior young bucks gettin killed as 1-3 yr olds. That and the fact that AL gives you 90+ days to do it with rifles is why the overall age structure is out of whack and sucks in a lot of areas in the state.

I agree completely.
