In addition to those BCLC mentioned, I'd add a Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10x40mm non CDS Exactly! Got one on my .308 Win. Was on sale for $340.

Just bought a vortex viper im liking pretty good I was a fan too but the more it shoot them and look through other brands (Leupold,Meopta) the more I see how poor the quality is

I just bought a burris 4X 3x12x56......illuminated.......I’ve always had leupold but this scope is awesome at low light to say the least....on sale for 349 bucks

My son's scope crapped out a month ago and I was faced with this exact same question. Bought a VX-3i. It's the 1st Leupold I've bought in a decade. Like it so far, glass is clear, scope is compact and light but have the typical Leupold issues I've had in the past. Scope doesn't adjust worth a crap, move it 4 clicks left and poi shifts way more or less than adjustment. Yes, scope is mounted correctly in Talleys and torqued correctly. Next, Leupold's standard duplex is fine for range work but is a bit too thin for low light. I know you can get the heavy duplex which is great for low light but sucks for range work. I wish their duplex reticle was a bit thicker like Swaro, Zeiss, Meopta etc. At $400 I'd recommend a VX-3i.........or better yet, I'd take BCLC's recommendation and get a used Conquest. I've got a 1/2 dozen of em and have never had a complaint.

I'm not sure if you can send a scope in to them and have installed by the custom shop though. One of the reasons I went away from Leupold many years ago was the very fine duplex reticle. Just couldn't see it in dark woods. This is not an issue in their VX5 or VX6 line of scopes. The reticles are similar to the European scopes and have the addition of illumination. But these are more than the OPs budget. If you can find a used Zeiss Conquest or Meopta Meopro would be a great scope.
