I shot a 200ish pound buck Monday evening with a 120 grain NBT out of a 7mm-08. Hit him dead behind the shoulder at about 175 yards and he ran over 200. Did not find him until Tuesday morning. The bullet did not exit and I could not believe he toted it like that. 20 years ago when I was younger and dumber...I bought a 300 wsm and proceeded to kill deer with it until I wised up. One morning I shot a calm feeding doe at 99 yards standing broadside on the edge of a 60-acre overgrown field with shooting lanes cut in it. I was propped on a sandbag in the shooting house window and took my time and made sure I shot tight behind the shoulder cause she was going to the processor. I knew the shot was true and didn’t even chamber another round after the shot. She mule kicked and took off across the wide open field and kept running and running. She ran literally 157 yards before she fell over dead. I was starting to think I missed until she fell over. The 150gr ballstic tip destroyed her insides and left a size-able exit hole. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes it would have been hard to believe she could run that far “dead”. A deer’s will to live can be incredible at times. This story is why I chuckle when folks say a “magnum” puts em down faster. Nowadays I shoot most of them with a 6mm creedmoor (243s pretty twin sister) 90 gr ballistic tip and they don’t make it 40 yards.
You're only as good as your worst shot-

I use 120 NBT out of my 7mm-08. Super accurate and measured slightly over 3000 fps pushed by Varget. Shot a fair doe at a slight quarter to, standing about 75 yards. Ran about 70 yards, not a drop of blood until the last jump over an embankment. Shot hit her front rib, exited opposite side rear rib. There is no guarantee unless the bullet hits central nervous system.
Own a savage high country in 300 WSM that loves 150 gr Accubonds over 4064. One hole at 100 yards and measured over 3200 fps. Curious how they'll perform.

I’ve thought long and hard about caliber and bullets over the years. I’ve come to determine that no caliber or bullet ensures a good blood trail or dropping them in their tracks. Unless you spine them, some deer will run no matter where you shoot them. I’ve dropped them with a 243 and had them run off like they weren’t hit from a 300 mag.
I shot a 191 pound buck Tuesday with a 180 grain partition from a 300 weatherby. He was quartering to the left. The bullet entered at the back of the shoulder, took out his heart and exited behind his ribs. He ran 75 yards and them tumbled down a hillside. I didn’t find any blood where he was standing, the first blood was about 15 yards into his death run.
I shoot a 110 pound doe with a 165 accubond out of my 308 opening morning and she dropped in her tracks.

A 6.8/270 120gr Accubond at 2550-2700, has been extremely effective an consistent over the last 4-5 years.....out to 250+....deer, hog, coyote....whatever. Sometimes more velocity gets you more DRT, but many time it just gets you a bigger mess on the gambrel.....and you still got to track it.
I will say that (for deer), as bore size goes up, velocity can come down and get a similar effect on how fast they die.

So many things I want to post about why y'all got deer running off but I've already posted most all I have to say about it of it multiple times over and over. And over. I haven't had one get out of sight in nearly 10 years. I remember the last one my wife shot it.
Most of them 7 Mag with a 160 Sierra. Wait...A Sierra? WHUT!
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Well, if you can shoot them where they can’t run, then it’s easily preventable. Sometimes light, cover, time, etc dictate where you have to hit a deer. In which case, they might run after being hit with a 650gr frangible .50 BMG. When I was biologist culling in LA, I could set up and take only shots I knew would be zero tracking, play with rifles, calibers, bullets, etc....just to see what worked best, etc. Just me, not you/anyone else, and not playing expert, but.....What I saw? Everything and nothing.....depending on where you hit them, period. If you aren’t gonna hit CNS, then there’s always a variable somewhere between DRT and how far they can get before blackout. Two holes will logically give a better recovery odds from any non-DRT. Gravity is a tool. I’ve seen them with the heart and both lungs blown to pieces from 3k+ 284s/30s and good bullets, run blind into tree trunks at full speed, off of cliffs, etc. I’ve seen them fall right over after being hit with a sliver of bone shard the size of a needle. You can always try to do what you can, but I’ve learned I can’t say never when it comes to some things.
