I'm 54. Any of you guys raised in Alabama and about my age remember the guy that would come to the schools and do the "snake show?" Man, I couldn't wait for that show every year! Always tried to get up front so to have a chance to get called up to help put the anaconda back in the sack at the end of the show! I got called a couple of times. I remember seeing him at Vestavia Elementary School when we lived in Northport in the early 70's.

Any chance his name was Page W?

I also do educational shows around town(boys and girls club, school, biy scouts. Etc). Seeing the kids(and adults) faces light up is one of my biggest joys.

I’m starting to feel uncomfortable with all of these “snake” handlers in here. Perch will show up anytime.

There was always a man and woman who came to Vinemont High School and I guess the other Cullman County schools to do a snakeshow. I watched it every single year I was in school. The man died and his wife kept doing it by herself.

My senior year (2006), she had those 3 mega rattlesnakes on the table coiled up and talking about how they could only strike 1/3 their body length. As she was messing with one on the end of the table, the one beside her popped her on the arm. She stayed relatively calm, but you could tell she was internally shook. She said she needed to go out back for a minute. I reckon she got treated real quick, but I always wondered if I'd ever see that happen.

I watched it at Baileyton. I heard on the incident you are talking about (possibly another in Cullman County but doubt it) that they almost let her die at the hospital. Supposedly she told them rattle snake and they would believe it and treated her for another type snake bite. I think it was her daughter or helper that came in and told them it was a rattle snake and they doubted her. She told them she would go to the van and get the one that bit her and thats when they agreed. All rumor and no proof to back that up. They seemed like good ole folks that enjoyed making an honest living. Like SJ22 said above Yarbrough rings a bell on the last name for some reason.

Buddy Hale was another. I went to school with his daughter in Prattville.

Damn, I went to a boring school. We never had anything like that.
We did have a couple of hot teachers who enjoyed snake handling though. I often volunteered to provide the snake.

The name Yarborough rings a bell. Had a deep baritone voice and Elvis sideburns. He was the first one that I ever heard say “red touches yellow will kill a fellow and red touching black is OK Jack.” As a little kid I thought that was so cool.

Dr. B

He don't know Jack!
It's, "red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black, friend of Jack"!
