Got a question. Just bought 40 acres just been clear cut. Been told to let it set for a year and spray it instead of planting now. Is it worth the extra money to spray before? And what’s it running per acre to spray and then what’s it run to plant per acre? And what’s a good stand of pines bringing now days per acre. Guy told me he got 1700 per acre about a month ago.

Turn into pasture and do something with it. You will make much more money in the long run.

call a forestry company. I know a guy that runs one, but idk if they can work anyone in this late in the year.

Roughly $100-120/ acre to spray it. About the same to plant, hand planting could be a bit less. Personally I would not plant a stand of pines without site prep (spraying).

I believe spaying before planting is the best practice. It also helps if the weeds and undesirables have a little growing time for the spraying to work more effectively. $1700 per acre would of had to of been some really nice timber and most likely hardwood to fetch that price.

I just cut, sprayed and re-planted about 260 acres and it ran pretty close to $300.00 per acre to spray and replant. I burned it myself and saved a good chunk of money. Additionally, I used containerized seedling which were more expensive. And it is absolutely worth it to spray before to make sure you get a good kill/burn on everything. The Guatemalan tree planters will thank you too.

Definitely do a chemical site prep before planting. Site prep burn afterwards also helps the planting crew plant with more ease. Your costs to replant could range from $200-$300/acre depending on tree selection and species (containerized vs bare root), pine or hardwood, hand crew doing your chemical site prep or helicopter. Regardless you’ll want to do a chemical site prep prior to planting.

Hollywud, I’m planting 35 acres in containerized LL and it’s costing me about $261/acre and that’s with me doing my own burning.

Not if you got it at the price I did. I would have bought it blind.

This place had the most tracks I’ve seen in one area in a long time. Deer are everywhere there. Has a creek running through it and has 15 yard or so to both side with hardwoods full of white oaks. I’m excited.

I bought it for my kids to hunt on. Not even sure I’m gonna plant yet. Prob gonna put a small pond on it.

It’s also surrounded by timber land he said he thought that no one leases it in the past 2-3 years. In total would be around 5-600 acres counting my 40. So if I can lease it maybe looking for some buddies.

Not joking here.... You very well might be better off just letting it grow up if you got it cheap enough. Otherwise you will likely lose money.

But there is no price tag on the what the kids will get out of it.

You have a blank slate to set it up to provide the best recreational activities. Plan plots and stand access with prevailing winds. A pond certainly adds opportunities.

Natural regen may be an option if a timber invests not a top priority

What kind of stand was it before planting? If it didn’t have a significant seed bearing pine component, you could get away with planting pounce treated seedlings and then a release spray next year. Total cost would be around $175/ for loblolly. Can’t really do longleaf that way.

You also may get some federal money to help with the site prep and longleaf planting. I know some landowners that have done that. Cut their out of pocket costs by 50% or more.
