I started college wanting to be a high school history teacher. I let other people talk me out of it due to low salary and dealing with teens. I worked preparing trust tax returns for 32 years until my job was outsourced. Did not enjoy it at all. I really like teaching and I loved history. I like working with teens and have always liked thinking I could have made a difference or good impression on young people's lives. And, maybe I could have taught them something. I look now at what our kids in this nation know about history and it saddens me. I worked another year and a half doing trust returns, but finally, the overtime just became too much (especially with an arthritic handicapped wife at home). Now I am still with that firm doing administrative and payroll work. I like the hours, but the pay is a lot lower and my family and I are struggling more financially than we have in a long time. Possible that if I had gone the teaching route, I would either be retired or maybe moved forward to teach in college. Cannot go back and I will say, even though I did not care much about my the career path I took, the good Lord has blessed and taken care of us. I am now 57 and know I probably not ever retire, but I will try to find the blessings the Lord has for me as I continue to work.
