In all the disussion about coyotes and their effect on deer, I noticed one particular study from Florida about their native panther restoration project. The panther is also native to our state. What would be your reaction to a panther restoration project in Alabama? Monday, 2:20 pm
Recovery of an Endangered Carnivore within the Context of Managing White-tailed Deer in Florida

Managing white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in the context of a federally protected carnivore is complex. The breeding population of the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is restricted to suitable habitat south of the Caloosahatchee River in South Florida. This population has steadily increased since 1995—from 20-30 to 100-160 panthers—and concerns have been raised regarding the impact of panther recovery on deer populations. South Florida deer populations persist at lower densities than in other portions of the southeastern US and are influenced by multiple factors aside from predation, most notably water level fluctuations. Previous prey selection studies have revealed deer, hogs, raccoons, and armadillos are the most common prey for panthers. A latitudinal gradient in the selection of large prey by panthers was noted from the Everglades ecosystem, (deer 78.4% and hog 0.7% of consumed biomass) to the northern portion of the breeding range (deer 27.0% and hog 58.7% of consumed biomass). These findings highlighted the importance of a healthy deer herd in South Florida to support a recovering panther population. Revisiting prey selection patterns following population expansion is essential to gain a better grasp of current interactions between the panther population and deer herd levels. We present preliminary results from a study that will use location clusters from GPS radiocollared panthers to assess predation rates. Subsequent findings may prove important to the continued recovery of the panther and effectively managing prey populations for both predators and hunters.

I firmly believe that there is such a project in Alabama already, or at least a project to study them and not publish the verified sightings or other proof that they are here.

I wouldn't have any problem with it. Might as well repopulate the Red Wolf and the Elk too. How about an all inclusive plan to reintroduce native animals/plants and eliminate non native ones.

I guess I would have to be on the fence... Dont like the idea of being tracked by a cougar... We would be their only compitation... But i guess if we could hunt them to that'd be alright but there is not a lot of area for them so encounter would be high compared to out west...

Would not work in Alabama. Too many locked cocked and loaded good ol boys that love to shoot stuff in Alabama. The state would probably see a 75 pecent mortality rate in there released panthers the first weekend of gun season.

In their mind the more you kill means you're a great hunter.

Florida is full of outlaws and they have panthers.
You won't see as many of them as you think.
Even in the Western States where populations are high, comparatively speaking, sightings are extremely low.
How many bobcats have you seen in a lifetime of hunting in Alabama? There are lots of them around the state but they aren't seen on a daily or even a yearly basis by most hunters.

A friend of mine was in a deer stand on the Eglin AFB line a couple of years ago and soon after a doe ran by a cougar with a tracking collar on came down the trail.

Maybe you need to have a little more appreciation for Alabama's hunters as well as the survival skills of panthers.

My wife's aunt lived in St. Clair County when the panther in the picture on that webpage was killed. She was excited when I found the picture and and my wife sent her a copy of it.
She remembers hearing it (or one like it) screaming one night down by the creek where she lived. She thinks it may be the same one she heard.

Release wolves and pathers? What planet do you live on. It would only be a matter of time till they were attacking cattle and showing up in neighborhoods.Coyotes are already invading neighborhoods and eating pets. Some of you are goofy !
