.Sure, you can go to the pound and roll the dice on getting a dog that’ll do the job and a small percentage of them with hunting breeds crossed up in their mix will likely be great at it….. but there’s a reason why none of the folks who actually track a bunch do that…..Same reason that folks wanting a hell of working lab would probably want a dog out of Juice…..You’re getting dog that has been specifically designed to do a certain task from a proven bloodline. Its still not a certainty that you’ll get a jam up dog but you’ve definitely put the odds a lot more in your favor than going to the pound and playing eenie meenie minee moe….

When someone asks what dog to get as a good guard dog….you don’t tell them just to go down to the pound and pick any old dog…….Just the same, when someone wants a tracking dog you get the one that fits certain criteria. All dogs aren’t good bay dogs…..All dogs don’t work as well in thick, heavy undergrowth……All dogs don’t work as well off lead in urban areas……All dogs don’t work the same on a lead...………All dogs don’t have the same amount of drive………..All dogs don’t work as well in swamps and water………etc...etc...etc...Anyone who throws out that line to just go get any old dog to be a tracker likely hasn’t been on too many tracks.

depends on the dog, depends on the breeding, depends on the breeder. Good dogs dont have to cost a lot, bad dogs can cost a lot, do your research fit what fits your needs. Hunting stock is different than a designer dog. That being said it is a matter of preference and what the dog will be used for. My dogs are versatile I can literally hunt upland game, track wounded animals, waterfowl hunt, shed hunt, you name it.

Good dogs can be had for free. My current black lab was destined for the pound. Got her !1 years ago. She has been a hell of a tracking dog. Has a nose that she knows how to use coupled with a unstoppable drive. Had a other lab given to us when our kids were young that was their constant companion. Luck plays into it but if you know what you want, put the word out and look around.

I’ve got a 6yr old female fox red that I paid 300 for and a yellow male that is 3 that I paid 350 for. Papers and good blood lines on both. My female is no doubt the best and smartest dog I’ve ever owned and if theirs a shed to be found she’ll sniff it out. I don’t think I could bring myself to spend a whole lot more than that on a dog.

Paid 600 for both of my brittanys. oldest one aint nothing but a lazy house dog/fishing partner. Other is one hell of a hunting dog. All he wants to do is work. Ive sat on my deck watching a college football game and thrown his dummy the whole game multiple times. Thats all he wants to do. both from the same sire, different dam. They are both from Nolan's Last Bullet lines.

I bought my lab from Duck dogs in Jemison from Dr.Black look them up. My dog constantly has the need to hunt and a high motor so keep that in mind

I paid $950 and a trip to Amite City LA. for a Jack Russell. But if she turns out to be anything like my last one it was well worth it.

BIL had a pup off Nolan’s Silver Bullet I think was his heritage. He was a trial dog worth some big money but turned down the offer.

I paid $100.00 and drove to Alex City to pick up my Original Mountain Cur, Sadie.

Got to meet and make a new friend in the process to boot!

I wouldn't trade her right now for any other dog, no matter their high dolla' price.

I've never spent big money on a dog and probably never will.

Here's the way I really look at overall.....Dogs are supposed to be one of...maybe the most..... manipulable species in terms of being able to alter their traits. They have the ability to basically mold them onto what we want them to be in order for them to assist us in life. There's a special connection between humans and dogs for this reason historically. I believe dogs were made that way on purposento assit us ...... basically a symbiotic relationship....

That being said.......you get a dog that best fits YOUR needs in a dog. What isnitnfhst your wanting the dog to assit with? It may be as simple as companionship of it may be more complicated than that. Choose a litter that gives you the best odds of getting the traits you desire.....

Then if you want to take it a step farther...... research about tests to do on young puppies.....sorta like a assessment of certain desirable traits.....then text the puppies and choose what you feel is the most promising one. The breeder will be able to tell you a lot about individual personalities. Keep in mind that some may have just not come out of their shell get. If your wanting it to be able to possibly find your deer no matter the breed......just take a deer leg and liver and do some little tests to see if one of the pups really shows an interest naturally. They're a handy thing that was given to you to assit you inmlife. Let your dog find your deer for you

I would spend good money for a dog that had a task to perform and performed it well. I would pay very little to nothing for a dog that was just going to be a pet.

I know our vetinarian was very supportive of pure bred dogs which I was surprised honestly.she was saying at least if people buy pure bred dogs most of the time they have researched the breed and are more willing to take good care of the pet.i just assumed she was all about getting a rescue dog
