Make sure it has two axles. I have a 6x12 single and wish I had a tandem axle.
Also get a tube frame and rails, not angles.

My daily is a 6.5x14 with dual 3500# axles, mesh sides and a raised mesh utility box up front. I have two others, 5x10 and 6x12 that rarely see action because I don't like to roll far on single axles.

Purpose? I have a 6x14 single axle. I went single axle so I and move it by hand in my limited space back yard. If I did double I would would have to use a vehicle to move it.

Off topic, but I rented a dump trailer for a couple days to haul off a bunch of debris and old rotten lumber I’d been keeping in the backyard. Best $120 I ever spent.

If you’re having it built have them use hubs that match your truck so you don’t need an extra spare.

I found a guy within 45 minutes of me that had 6.5 x 12s for $1,050. That's a full 12 inches wider than I had before and it makes a huge difference when
you're backing a ZTR up on it. I wouldn't want anything with any less length, either.

I don't know about perfect but I like my tandem 6x14. The side rails in front of the axles double as ramps. So, I can park my 4 wheeler sideways across the front and then pull the sxs in behind it. One axle also has brakes which I don't really ever use. But have come in handy when towing full sized vehicles or heavier tractors.
The only downside is a young kid or injured adult would have issues with the ramps.

Stray, I have a 6.5 x 12 with everything you mention above. I also had it built with expanded metal high sides and I will never have another trailer without them. I would consider double axle if I did it again. If not double axle, go with a 5,000 lb single axle at least. I would make sure you have a spot for a full size spare. Make sure your tailgate is easily removable. I would weld a chain to my tailgate pins to avoid losing them. Run your trailer wires in rigid conduit under the trailer to protect them. Put steel protection around your tail lights, not just sitting out in the open to knock off. Put bearing buddies on the wheels.

I have a new 6X12 dovetail with 3 foot gate. 3500 lb axles. Great trailer. Bought from trailer world, but you can get it at Safford Hardward under the Caliber Brand for a little less.

I really like my 6 x 12 with a single 5200lb axle and 215-85-16 E rated tires. IMO anything less than 16ft is too short for tandems, they really eat up tires.

I've got a 7000# GVW 6.5x16 tandem axle with a lockable cage on the front and tool box on one side.
It'll handle two mowers or two 4wheelers or the Gator. Has a 4 ft spring assist loading gate.
I swapped out the cheap Goodyear tires and replaced them with 10 ply tires. It's a right handy trailer.

My use will be that of "utility". Mowers and lawn care stuff, hauling junk from rentals, hauling appliances, yard debris, utility vehicle or 4 wheeler, pine straw-mulch-yard stuff. Nothing super heavy. I won't use it every day, just several times a month.
