OH yes, especially teenagers, they REALLY love those stories.

Hes using $200 speed spool on a ducket rod and a nasci on a g loomis. Its not like hes fishing with a Shakespeare combo from wal mart, but I have caught several bass over 8lb with a Shakespeare combo

I have 2 of those dc reels, wish I had 6 more.

I dont own a DC, but I would reccomend the regular curado as well. I have one shimano baitcaster with the mgl spool (metanium). It will cast a long way and i have it adjusted where I dont have any backlash issues. If it casted any further I feel like I wouldn't be able to get a good hook set if I caught one on the end of a cast.

My newest bait casters are over 25 years old. Same with my rods. I still catch fish.

I caught the first fish I'd ever caught on a baitcaster with this reel sometime in the early 60s. I had caught lots of fish on a spincaster, but that was the first day my dad let me use his old baitcaster. I remember that I caught a jack first, and then caught a bass. The reel is a Pflueger Supreme with the Cub drag system. It has a level wind, but it is of course a direct drive with no anti reverse. I haven't used it in a while, but I am gonna plan to fish with it some this fall. They were making this model in the 30s, but I don't know when my father got it.

And those had branded line. Folks think it's something new.

My grandaddy gave me this one when I was about 10 years old.
A genuine Pflueger Silkast 1953 model. I never heard her sing but she's caught a pile of fish.

Thisun sits in a rodholder in my bedroom. You can see it still has the old braided line on it and the last backlash the poor old fella who used it put in it.

Joe is that a steel rod or fiberglass? Hard to tell in the picture.

That's what mine is. It's a steel rod, only about 40" long. Very flexible. I still do some pond fishing with it.

It's a shame they aren't worth more. People should appreciate that kind of quality and craftsmanship.

This thread inspired me to give the old Plueger a good cleaning and take it fishing. I was taking it apart and one of the screws that holds It to the frame broke in half, and it is some sort of oddball thread. I found a lot of screws the same size, but the thread was different. Went to eBay and found one just like it for $15, so it is on its way to become a parts reel.

In the meantime, I put it back together with super glue and put it on the rod that my father used for topwater fishing, and then dug out one of his old plugs. The eyes on the rod were held on with electrical tape, but that was the way he used it on his last fishing trip 20 years ago so I left it that way. Didn't get a hit on the first cast, but as I was lifting the lure into the boat this one attacked it, causing a horrendous backlash. Been a while since I have fished with a reel with no anti reverse. I got it loose and caught a couple more before my superglue job broke loose.

Mark, it still sings even though it is well lubricated. I don't think you can keep that spinning handle from singing.

There's an art to fishing with that old Pflueger, but I enjoy using it around the little ponds.
I guess it's the original "singing caster". 👍 I've tried to keep the rod and reel just the way grandaddy left it.

If I have ever fished with that lure before I don't remember it. It's called a Creek Chub Injured Minnow, and it is unfair to the fish. I switched it to another reel after the Plueger died and caught about 10 on it. Anything that hit it would immediately get hooked by all 3 sets of hooks and would not even be able to pull. All you had to do was wind them in; they couldn't swim.

That old equipment could be a lot more effective than most folks would think.

I have an old Penn 990 power mag(old tech for magnetic brakes) I used to trolley-fish the piers with. With a dab of Hot-sauce lube on the gears it wouldn't hum, it'd sing a song. I could get my anchor out to 150-170 yards on a good cast.
