That depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are trying to use trail-cameras as a herd monitoring tool (which is what I use them for), my top three tips would be:

1) Run cameras during the hunting season (some only run them pre- and post-season).

2) For cameras run during the season, focus on trying to inventory the buck population (the number of uniqe bucks that use your property during hunting season) and track the number and ages of bucks over the years (trends in population and age structure).

3) To inventory a buck population, the best place to put cameras is over scrapes the month before through the month after your local peak breeding date. For example, if your local peak breeding date is January 10, run cameras on real or mock scrapes from at least December 10 through February 10.
