I hunted the first four days of season and haven't been back. Deer sightings were very sporadic. Acorns were everywhere. Almost all the deer I saw were on acorns. A few deer even skirted the edge of food plots eating acorns on the edges, and never entered the fields. Deer weren't even seen on standing corn crops. Seems the acorns have most of their attention. I didn't have a problem seeing deer on most hunts but I saw far more mid-late morning activity that early mornings and evenings.

Locating "THE" tree is going to be difficult due to the volume of acorns on the ground, but if I could offer any advice I would skirt the edge of a bedding area and catch them slipping out to feed on acorns. twocents

I realized opening day that they had left the big soybean fields they had been eating all summer and were hitting the fresh acorn crop just hitting the ground.Funny thing was they were bedding in the beans all day(less mosquitos i think) and moving to the swamp at night to feed on new acorns.Didnt seem to matter what kind

twocents I hope this helps

I hunted acorns the first couple of days and didn't see a deer. I have been hunting green browse the last few days and have seen deer every hunt. My food plot cams have deer on them every morning and evening, they are over browsed and are now a big mud hole. I am thinking about overseeding with marshall rye this week. It doesn't make any sense, there are acorns everywhere.

My season has sucked so far. Going to be out of town all this week, comeback for 2 weeks and then leave "for awhile". My hunting season will be over after that.....period.

I've been out 3 COLD mornings & haven't seen a thing. The only deer I've seen was at 1:30 & didn't get a shot at it. I've been shying away from evening hunts for fear of not finding the deer if I did stick one but I think that's when they may be moving.

My first six hunts, I hunted transition areas (trails) between bedding areas and feeding areas (hardwood acorns). I had a deer within bow range every hunt. I never hunted a field. The deer are bedding on us (mostly planted pines) and going to feed at night on the surrounding properties (open hardwoods/crop fields).

This weekend, I hunted small greenfields Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon. I saw one spike total.

Saturday morning I hunted one of my trails and saw a nice buck bed down 50 yards away, coming from some open hardwoods and bedding in some planted pines. Sunday morning, I saw several doe/fawns on the edge of a pine plantation/hardwood SMZ.

Right now, the deer are walking through or around the greenfields to go to acorns/corn/soybeans. But in a month when the acorns are mostly gone and the corn and soybeans are harvested, the open hardwoods and fields where they are spending their time now will be devoid of deer, and they will be back in the greenfields.

I know this, but I had to beat my head against the wall anyway and find out for sure this past weekend.

It will also help when they cut all the corn and soybeans around the Sipsey River in Fayette County. Normally it is already gone, but because it was so wet this year and planted late, it is still standing. Between those fields, and the acorns along the river and on some of the hills around us, there is no reason for a deer to be in our pines other than to bed down.
