It over heated today.I put a gallon of coolant in it and still didn’t fill it up. Cranked it and no external leaks. What’s y’all’s opinion? Cracked head?
I’m about to drain the oil and see what’s in it

Was it just perhaps low on coolant?
Did it over heat after you filled it up?

Could be a bad fan clutch, clogged radiator, bad water pump, possibly a few other things I can’t think of at the moment. I wouldn’t jump to cracked head immediately though.

Where would the coolant go?
I drained oil and it looks normal

I'm no certified mechanic but I dont believe the engine coolant last forever. How often have you had to add to it?

My 05 did the same. Ended up being the water pump. Sometimes it leaked sometimes it didnt.

I think mine was water pump...couldn't see a big leak or anything but had to put more fluid in every few days...I took it to mechanic, I'm not 100% sure on water pump but it definitely wasn't a head or gasket

Thanks. I’m thinking water pump. I’ve replaced that before. It has been squealing a lot and I was suspect of the water pump, but most of the time they have busted wide open on me. Gonna get it to the shop. Thanks again

I replaced my water pump in January, it blew out (i.e. the bearings went bad). Anyway it can go bad like that and coolant be everywhere. Or there is a leak in the water housing (bad seal, crack, bearing seal) letting fluid get out and onto the fanbelt which might explain the squealing.

Look at the water pump...if it's been leaking, you'll probably see a small rust colored line where it's been weeping out
Could also be the heater hose connector(s)...they are plastic and prone to cracking, especially on a truck that old. They won't leak until engine warms up...the crack will open up, coolant/water will leak out, then when engine cools off, the crack will close up enough to keep it from leaking.

Put a water pump on it ! But check ur engine oil level and make sure no water in oil !

Fill it up with water and roll on. Those trucks are notorious for having a leaking radiator. More than likely it that or a water pump. Fill it up with water and see where it is leaking

I emptied the oil first. No water. Almost 5 quarts came out. I haven’t taken off the filter and filled back yet cause I didn’t have a filter or enough oil. I did fill the coolant up. I never saw any fluid while it was hot or cold. Doesn’t leak out enough to leave any on the driveway. I’m betting it’s the water pump since it was squealing. Just hard to see it in this truck. I’m gonna fill it up with oil and then see if it start screaming at me again. If so I’ll go get the water pump checked. I just freaked out a little when it took a gallon and a half and I wasn’t seeing any leaks!!

The water pump is a easy fix is hour truck electric fan or hub drive
