He needs to show he can be in charge of himself for awhile before being given a church. Like all the time, a Degree doesn't make you smart or in this case a leader. A leader is simply someone who is able to influence the behavior of others. I'd be very leery of him being able to do that with a church comprised mostly of older people. Perhaps the Methodist leadership thought that he might be able to add energy and younger people to the congregation?

I've never known of anyone under the age of 25 that would be equipped to Pastor a church.
Just the counseling aspect would be really awkward. He hasn't been out in the world or church
enough. Smaller churches tend to have one or two strong personalities, too, that require a strong
leader.
