I'm gonna call BS on the 300 lbs and say thats just trolling for reactions

I have always used 100 pounds per acre of mix with 300 pounds per acre triple 13 then top dress with 5 pounds of Crimson clover and it has always done very well, nice and thick.
Hit it with nitrogen in late December at a rate of 50 pounds an acre.

Fertilizer 6 bags @ $12 a bag = $72
Seed 3 bags @ $20 a bag = $60
Gly = $5
Fuel= $10
= $147 per acre.

Just curious for those that sling out 300 lbs of 13-13-13. You ever calculated how much of each nutrient that actually is? Have you ever done a soil test to see what the recommended fert/lime rate is?

Soil tests will save you a lot more than the few bucks it costs. We have about 20 food plots and very few of them have the same nutrient requirements. In most cases if you use balanced fertilizer, you paying for something you don't need

Definitely do a soil test. I’ve done the mail in soil test and it tells you the PH and exact amounts of lime and fertilizer needed for your soil based on what you’re planting. Convenient because they email it to you in 48 hours. For $7 or $8 it beats wasting money on fertilizer you don’t need.

They say all the nutrients you need are already present in the soil in terms of P, K,Ca, micros, etc....and just need to be mineralized into a form the plants can use or brought from the subsoil to the surface.....that is what they say anyways

You'll need to spend alot of money and time on plots. If you dont then well......

If your soil pH is low, you're wasting your money on fert. You're better off not spending a dime on fert and spend your money on lime IF you need lime. And it's not just about "making your plots green and puurdeee". A cereal, etc... growing in 6.8 pH soil will taste better to the deer than the same grown in 5.8 acidic soil. RE: The more neutral pH soils allows for more nutrients to be taken up into the plant therefore, tasting better to the deer and benefiting your deer because that good taste is because of higher nutritious content.

True story: Years ago, a big field at our NEW hunting club tested really acidic on soil test. We limed it in early summer and spread the amount of lime required (it was a lot!). Of course we planted that fall but planted cereal grains and winter forages. We planted NO clovers. Well, that spring, clover was everywhere and I called my guys to see who planted the clover... NO ONE planted any clover. The seed, apparently, was in the ground the entire time. It just needed the right soil pH and it exploded.
