Yes. All state employees that have a vehicle assigned to them pay a percentage annually for personal use. But you can’t go out of your way of an assignment and make a personal run for any reason.

They don't bother farmers up here , but loggers ,good lawd , they're all over them, all day every day. They'll stop them , weigh them and go over their trucks with a fine tooth comb. They'll sit along 72 near Scottsboro and let every 18 wheeler go by except log trucks, they target them .

I wish they'd pick on van trailers a little more. Some of the stuff we see at the shop makes me scared to pass a van trailer on the road. If it's not a new pristine white van trailer, y'all better give them a wide berth.

As someone who used to weigh trucks with portable scales there is a method to their "targeting of log truck". Most over the road trucks are going over permanent scales, are traveling through and for the most part are legal in other states which have lower weight limits than Alabama. So the local guys get picked on because, early on, and I'm referring to late 70's log trucks were greatly overweight and helped tear up the roads. Since they travel within the state they didn't hit the scales, they could get away with more tonnage. What also is going on is certain paper mills are only paying up to the legal limit allowed by law so trucks have no benefit to grossly exceed weight limits. However when we set up we weighed what came down the road. This was in 1977-79, things might be different now.

This was before DOT it was Al. Highway Dept. along with Al. Public Service Commission(those guys were brutal).

I did see a loaded truck hit the scales at 125k pounds hauling corn one time. It was a high sided coal trailer. That guy got a lesson on how not to overload his trailer next trip to the field

I drove trucks for 20 years, and in that time I only got 2 tickets. One was from a NC DOT cop for doing 66 mph in a 65 zone. He stopped me on a Sunday morning just outside of Greenville, NC. He looked over my truck, and log, and apologized to me, but they were ordered to write tickets for any stop they did, thanks to the rash of truck accidents NC was experiencing. Of course I plead not guilty on the ticket, and it was thrown out. The second one was a ticket for parking and sleeping on a on ramp in VA. where I paid the $35 fine. The few other tickets I got were written to the company for trailer or truck issues. Were the cops wrong? No, that's what they get paid to do. Could they have given me a break? Sure, but see the previous sentence. As for the log trucks, all posters are right saying they target them. Along with container chassis, they are the least maintained trailers in the country and without a scale anywhere close, they are easy pickins' for at least some violation. As for pristine white van trailers, there was a saying that if you drove into Cal. with a out of state washed and clean trailer, you'd have a 50% chance of getting stopped at a scale, if you had a dirty trailer you were definitely getting turned out back.

No victim, no crime. Tickets and citations have very little to do with public safety and much more to do with public funding. In effect, law enforcement has become another form of taxation.

Modern vehicles are so much safer than vehicles from even just 20 years ago, meanwhile speed limits haven't adjusted.

I got pulled over last year moving one of our cotton pickers. Said we were impeding traffic going 18 in a 55.

that's almost as bad as the popo lady in the itty bitty town I'm from....gave a "sight determined" speeding ticket...35mph in a 30mph zone.... to a backhoe traveling through town. never has and never will get up to that speed, unless in neutral freewheeling down a long hill....and we don't have anything that resembles a long hill in Isola, Miss'ippi!!! Judge laughed at her and dismissed it.

Well, people like Geezer would be the victim. I hate when people speed down our county road. I have kids playing in the yard. One distraction and they jump the ditch and into the yard. At 45 or less the ditch will stop them or they will have more time to react.
