i'm planning a hunt for marion county on a cousin's land. i know nothing about the land except that it is a huge tract with pines, pasture and hardwoods; former tobacco farm. i'll go for several days sometime during the long gun season. any idea on best month? marion county is in the north central part of the state. i'll be getting additional data on the land ... thanks.

I hunted S.C for several years in the low country. Barnwell and Alandale South Carolina. Season open August 15th in low country. They do use corn there. Not sure when season open in that area but if you want one in velvet you would have a good chance if you go August 15th.

I have hunted South Carolina for years and I shot a nice velvet buck there the second day of the season one year. Lots of deer for sure. I liked the opener and the pre rut /rut there.

We manage several properties in SC. Focus on early Oct for velvet buck. Rut hunt can vary depending on the county. Talk with local taxidermists and find out when most mature bucks are brought in.

I think you mean early September? No velvet bucks after the second week in September. Our rut is mid to late October around Darlington County

About 45 miles. Lots of farming and good deer in that area.

Late October should be solid for that county. You’ll see what hodgepodge is talking about once you get East of Columbia on I-20. Still a decent amount of agriculture out that way. One thing to keep in mind, SC is on a tag system so be sure to put in for your license a couple of weeks before you come down, or be sure to stop by a licensing office to make sure you have them in hand before you hunt.

No. But I would like to! Turkey and deer. Have no interest in killing a buck in velvet. Doesn't do a thing for me.

I think the season (deer) comes in early and they like to run dogs.

Marion is in Game Zone 4. Rifle opens September1 - January 1. You can archery hunt August 15-31.
Generally speaking, it is hard to beat the whole month of October, depending on the weather. First good cool snap in October alot of big deer are killed. It can be good on into the 2nd week of November as well.
Somebody above commented about killing a velvet buck in October. That won't happen unless it is a cactus buck. Most bucks have shed their velvet by the 3rd week of August.
Hunted SC my whole life. Never hunted Marion county but it has good deer.
