I don't really even doubt that the prices are legitimate, I mean the business world is too cutthroat to arbitrarily inflate prices "just because people will pay it." If you consider the cost of goods and labor these days, it's not hard to tally the cost.
But nevertheless, people are payment buyers....somewhat out of necessity, but mostly out of worldview. Almost no one thinks of the cost anymore, but rather monthly cash-flow. From 1995 thru 2000, I worked at a Toyota dealership, first as a salesman and then as the F&I guy for the last 2 years. You learned quickly to STOP talking price! Sure, people always ask about price, but it's just a conditioned response. They don't know what the correlating payment equals, so you could waste a ton of time talking price to someone who'd back out when they realized the payment. $50,000 sounds good for a truck with a $60,000 sticker, but you're still looking at $900 payment for 60 months. They gone! 72 months is still $785 month. Crap, 84 months is still right at $700 a month!!!! And that's just a normal 1/2 ton 4WD truck, nevermind the 3/4 diesels that everybody and their mama drives nowadays. The idea of a vehicle payment that high for that many months makes me want to vomit. I "could" go buy a brand new 3/4 diesel today, but ain't NO way on earth I would, I just don't see how/why it could possibly be worth it?? I don't "like" it THAT much.
The world of bass boats is even worse. You ever notice how many $75,000+ bass boats are around????? Payment buyers. $75,000 for 15 years is $585 a month. What in the @#$#@ are these people thinking???? Look at 15 year old boats, they're far out of style, most of them are worn out in poor condition, the motors have been rebuilt, etc. Does it ever cross a fella's mind, what do you have after making 10 years of payments @ $585 a month on that bass boat? 5 more years. On a boat you hate, and are still terribly upside down in.
I see it in insurance still every day. Been doing this for 19 years now, and it's still the same. I can get someone two quotes on something: One could be $1,000 a year, but you have to pay $300 upfront, then have 7 payments of $100 dollars. The other could be $1,500 a year, BUT it's a simple $125 down and then $125 a month. 99% of them will pick the highest overall price. Look at the RV/Camper industry. Unreal what new campers sell for and how fast they depreciate. I am very happy with my 2016 camper for 1/3 the price of new. One of the 3 people I mentioned in the post above with a 4-figure car payment also has a camper that they financed for some obscene amount of time. I want to say I heard it was 15-20yrs, but I can't swear to it. They originally intended to buy a less expensive used one but said they ended up having to buy new because they "couldn't afford a used one" (ie: they could only "afford" one if financing was available). I love them to death but that just doesn't make good financial sense to me.
