My 5 year old has been deciding he wanted to go hunting with me the last few weeks. I've been stuck at work quite a bit and finally found a good day to give it a go. I was assuming it would just be a leisurely stroll through the woods when we left at 11 to go but that was just fine. We tried a large greenfield at a friends first with no luck so we headed down a road through the hardwoods. In between the humming and stick kicking I'd stop and cut loudly to see if by some miracle we could at least hear one. About the third stop one gobbled and he was close. We were in a terrible spot but I assumed we couldnt get far. We found the first tree I could and sat down. The next call and he was probably not more than 75 yards away. I just knew he was going to start moving or talking but he didnt move a muscle. One more soft Yelp and he headed straight for us. I shot him just as he crossed the 40 yard mark. I would never have guessed he would be such a great bird. I havent measured with a flexible tape yet but he has some great spurs on him. This will absolutely be a day I'll never forget.
