James, even though it was a difficult decision, it was the only option that you had. Now, your challenge will be to make certain that you son doesn't feel responsible for having to put the dog down. Something like that can stay with a kid for a long time. Not sure how you handled that, but I would have considered not telling my son that we had to put him down, and just left that he had to go to another home.

I say this, because my oldest son was bit in the head by my brother-n-laws Akita when he was only 9 years old. Very similiar situation, the dog was lying by the back door asleep and he had gone over to see his uncle. He startled the dog and the dog went for his face. He turned his head and ended up with 74 stiches in top of his head, fortunately for him, it missed his eyes. After a few days of isolation, his uncle decided to put him down. To this day, my son has issues with big dogs.
