Went after them again this morning. Was sitting at home last night and Casey (foldemup) texted me and asked if I wanted him to go with me so he could help get the jinx off of me since he's been on fire killing turkeys the last few days. I said sure! We finally decided to go to one of my new places where BrentM and I didn't hear a bird last week....said we would go over to mine or foldemup's club if we didn't hear any there. I was running a little late and we got to the listening spot at about 6:20 and turkeys were already gobbling good all around. We heard 3 different birds, best we could tell, that were within reach of where we could hunt. The nearest one had hens cutting up all around him so we said piss on him and headed around and started up to the other birds. We got up the mountain just a little and stopped and listened before proceeding because it was WIDE open in there. There was a bird gobbling good a couple hundred yards around and just up from us so we decided to target him. We slipped up the mountain to get on his level and decided we wanted to get across a hollow before we started trying to work him. Just as we were coming out of it, and had gotten to prolly 150 yards from the bird, a hen was still sitting in the tree about 50 yards away and started putting. Crap! We decided to crawl up toward her and see if anything was under her on the ground and she flew on off. We sat down and stayed quiet for about 15 minutes and our bird eventually started gobbling again on his on. I got my calls out and cut at him and he cut me off....we're in business we think. It's prolly only about 7:00 when we sat down. At about 8:30, and one other calling sequence and him only moving around in a little race track still at prolly 150 yards....we decided it was time to start crawling toward him with the hill in between us to see if we could make something happen. We get prolly 50 yards worth of crawling done and another turkey (either a jake or a longbeard) had come in silent on the next bench up and busted us crawling and started putting. Crap!!! We were trying to get a shot at him but never could tell if he was a longbeard or not. He finally left and we just sat up on the ground trying to figure out what to do next. We sat quietly for a good little while because the turkey we were on had started putting too. Once everything had been quiet for a good long while, I pulled out my slate and purred and clucked and got nothing. Casey asked if I was ready to get up and go try to strike another bird and I told him that I wanted to try one more thing and to ease up toward a tree and some rocks. Like an idiot, I cut on my mouth call before I was all the way up to my tree I was gonna sit against and a freakin turkey gobbled CLOSE (prolly 75 yards) just around the way we were headed when we were crawling. I told him I was scared to move but I moved just a touch more and Casey laid down on his left elbow low to the ground and it wasn't just a second until them blue heads starting coming around the corner and Casey saw them. My gun wasn't all the way up and I had to freeze. I started to yelp and move at the same time and shoot the strutter at what I thought was about 45 yards but was really wanting us to double and he didn't stay still long and was gone from the lane. They walked off to the left behind some rocks and we went ahead and got our guns on up. They never walked out from behind the rocks and when the one bird gobbled they were back out at prolly 75 or 80 yards. We finished getting our guns up and I cut at them again and they came back to the exact same spot and started looking our way again. We were trying to both get lined up on one, but I just couldn't let them walk off again without killing one so I smoked the one I was looking at and another one started moving fast off to the right and I was telling Casey to bust him but he couldn't get a shot. When we got up and ran over there birds went everywhere. There were at least 5 males turkeys and maybe 6...still not sure. I didn't kill the strutter but just another longbeard that I could see good...didn't matter to me. I thought it was about 45 yards but it ended up being 53 yards with Casey's rangefinder! Those Mag Blends did a number on him at that distance! So thankful to the Lord that I got to kill another one and with Casey being right there with me it was that much more awesome! Can't wait to go again!!!!

The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.

LOL, been there seen that many a time. Those mountain birds are so dang hard to call in. I've been lucky enough to kill my share by sitting down and calling one in to my set up without ever moving, but from time to time you have to do just what you did and crawl. For those that haven't experienced the highs and lows of hunting in terrain with ridges and shelves and gullies coupled by big boulders it is a challenging place to kill a turkey to say the least. I've seen/ heard gobblers, even without hens, strut 50 yds to the right and 50 yds to the left on a shelf for over 2 hours. Many a time they have been no more than 50 yds away but I couldn't see them.

Congrats on a good bird! #2 usually seems to come a little faster.
