Everything I've planted is popping up well except my beans. I put 2 seeds of Blue Lake Bush Beans in each hole spread out 6 inches apart, about 10 planted spots and it's going on almost 3 weeks and only see a few seeds sprouting. Am I being inpatient or do I need to replant? Any tips if I have to re-plant? The seeds were coated with something but not sure what... My lima beans and purple hulls have been in the ground for 12 days and and the germination is sparse. Kinda think the co-op sold me some bad seed . No packing date to be found. Mine didn't have a date either... Hopefully they'll come up. Otherwise I'm not sure what to do to increase germination before planting if anything. Or if I need to find different seeds

Or if I need to find different seeds I think because of the green bean shortage due to bad crops last year, there is lots of old seed being sold. Only seed I bought this year was the Providers and they germinated fine. All the others I had and they did fine also. The zipper cream seed I planted a few weeks ago didn’t germinate well at all. If it’s not better when I get home they will be replaced with purple hulls.

And my wife may divorce me if I can't grow some sort of string bean LOL. I got my seeds from a known local fertilizer store and they swore they were last years seed but they come in a generic bag with the variety hand written on it and no other info. I get just about all my seed from a company in South Georgia call Hoss Tools. They guarantee fresh seed and each batch of seed is germ tested and labeled on the package. They are a good company ran by a father and son and the take costumer service to heart. You pay a little more for the seed but shipping isn’t bad and usually get the seed in a few days. So far the only issue I had with any of their seed is the zipper cream seed. Not sure if it’s the seed or if I planted to soon after I turned all those turnips under. They have a nice website and lots of informative YouTube videos.

should I add blood meal and fertilizer and bone meal to them or no.....I really don't want to go out and get that crap.....I'm not a farmer Im a unemployed mechanic....

I put an aspirin , banana peel, coffee grounds, a egg and a sardine in the holes for my tomatoes this time. Usually I just put them in the dirt. Don't know if it's going to make a difference but I will say to only be out for a week they are dark green.

Its just stuff i had on hand. Seen where people put a fish, banana peel, aspirin ,egg and multivitamin in with their's. Didn't have time to catch some fish so that's where the sardines came from. Lol

I started a compost pile where I'm adding coffe grounds, egg shells, old leaves, grass clippings,
left over vegetable matter. I had been adding it to the soil but figured I'd just make my soil.

I got very lucky last night. I forgot to cover my tomato plants. One got burned some but not enough to kill it. One of two things happened. I mulched around my plants with green grass clippings. They are going through a heat and that may have kept frost from forming on the plants, or it rained enough to wash the frost off them before the sun came up. When I put the grass clippings around the plants, I knew that they'd give off heat. My intention was to keep the soil warmer. If any of you try that, make sure you leave a little ring around your plants where the clippings don't touch the stem. The heat can kill the plant.

The area I plant was originally part of my yard with grass growing in it. This area has been planted to about 10 years and tilled every year. I have added topsoil over the years and I have limed and put out fertilizer each year. I spray glyphosate at least a month or so before planting and I spray again a few days before tilling the soil. I plant and it seems like everything is dead but as soon as the first rain hits it looks like I am better growing sod than a garden. In a few weeks it is solid grass and green growth. Is there any way to avoid this?

I have not tilled in 2-3 years and weeds are better, but not totally gone. Garden idea

Plastic mulch or woven ground cover and cut or burn a hole in it for the plants to grow thru. Or you can get a small propane torch and burn the grass. Or rig you up a small hand sprayer with a funnel on the end of the wand and spray around the plants and between rows with gly. Do this on a real calm morning and be very careful no to get it on the plants. Also you can cultivate the grass and weeds with a hoe or rake when they are small. Try to never let weeds and grass go to seed in the garden. The more you kill before it goes to seed, the less of a seed bank you will have. There is also an option for a pre emerge herbicide like triflouralin or pendumethelin. Row covers is the route I would go. Lots of options.
