Lots of info on the web. I planted mine last weekend. You are supposed to build a trellis to support the heavy weight of them once they get mature. I made mine out of some cedar posts I cut. I'll post a picture this weekend if I can remember.

they will grow forever. we made crissoak posts and locked them in with a 45degree wedge and used some old barbed wire. the base of the vine is thick. we placed ours about 4 1/2 foot high so when the vines started fruiting we didnt have to worry about rats getting the low hanging fruit. good memories around a ripe vine of muscadines.

We used to use them all the time. They make great corner posts when your pullin barbed wire. But if they catch on fire they will burn for a week

I planted some the fall before last at my farm and they are doing great. I used 4x4s and wire to make the trellis, the tree tubes were recomended by the nursery for a few years.

I will look for a closer pic when i am down there next I will take one, the tubes a great they protect them from the wind and for a few years you can roundup around them keeping the weeds away. I have a few tubes left if you need some.

You need to use heavy post with bracing and strong wire/cable to hold up vines like that. In a few years grapes have a tendency to pull down the light built stuff and you will have a mess trying to rebuild it.

I built mine to the specs from Ison's nursery used 4x4's and the gauge (57 i think) wire they recommended. My set up is pretty stout.

I think it was 9 gauge wire. You can get it at Lowes around the chain link fencing.
I built one year before last and by the second year, the vines have filled it out to both ends. I didn't use the tubes but probably should have.
Read up on how to prune them. That is going to be the trick to getting plenty of grapes. The wire will work better than a hog panel when it comes time to prune them.
There are a lot of You-tubes out there about how to prune them as well as extension publications.

My dad is a winemaker and makes the best wine in North Alabama. At 84, he has reached the point that he is not able to tend to them like he used to. The job of pruning and raising grapes has fallen into my lap. The only reason we still mess with them is people from all over come to get them from my dad. He used to be buddies with a man named Putnam who looked just like Col. Sanders of KFC. I bet my dad and him produced over 500 gallons of wine a year when they were in their prime of life. If you want to know "anything" about grapes, or the winemaking process, get back with me and I'll get you in touch with him. He still loves to teach people how to grow grapes!
