Anyone gotten one? I currently have a non-Star Driver License....we're going to Quantico in the near future and was told we'd either need a Star ID or a passport to get on base. I have a passport, but would rather not take it if I don't have to.

For anyone that has gotten one recently, how much of a PITA was it (was there a wait?) and how much do you have to pay for it? The website says if your DL has not yet expired, you'll have to pay for the star ID, but doesn't say how much....

I'm looking at the paperwork on it as I type. You are good to go if you take your passport down there with you. They are free. The biggest PIA is if you don't have a DL examiner's office nearby. They are the only ones that can issue them. The County license office can't do it.

well, I answered one question but it raised another...

per the website, you can get a Star ID Driver License before your existing Driver License expires, but "you will have to pay for a duplicate" ($23.50)

My DL expires 5/27/2020, and per the website on general Driver Licenses......."Your Alabama driver's license expires four years after it is issued and the expiration date is shown on the license. The license may be renewed at any time within 180 days prior to expiration"

So, will I have to pay $23.50 to get a Star ID or will it be no cost since I'm within the 180 day renewal window anyway?

A phone call to the examiner's office of your choice should be able to clear that up for you (assuming you can get them to answer the phone).

Be sure you have all the required documents with you when you go.

I got mine the last time I renewed my DL. At that time you, had to get it at any State Troopers office. I'm sure it's still that way. They are very picky about what paperwork you bring. I don't remember paying any extra for it. I had to wait 2-3 hours, but it was worth it. Initially, they said to renew a DL with a Star ID already on it, you had to do it at the Troopers office. They told me later they said it could be renewed like a normal DL at your courthouse. I'll make sure I ask again when mine comes due. I had veteran added to my DL while I was there also, just needed a copy of my DD-214.

When I renewed my DL recently they gave me the info sheet about the Star ID I asked if I needed to go home and get my Birth Certificate and do it while I was renewing and they told me that I could just come back. I asked if I had to pay again and they said "no' the star ID was free. This came from one of the few people that I trust in the Dallas County License Office so take it for what it is worth.

I'm not trying to discredit your source, but that quote above was a copy/paste from alea.gov.

i had to take someone to the DL office in montgomery about 4 months ago we arrived 30 minutes early around 7:30 am line was wrapped into the parking lot
about 1/3rd of people there were getting the star most were still in the lobby around 11:00 when we left. Id probably just carry my passport

yeah, that's similar to the reports I've heard....ugh. I may just take my passport. Really didn't want to, just because I've heard it's a nightmare if it gets lost/stolen, but I seriously doubt I'll have a chance to go to the highway patrol office for 2 or 3 hours (or more) between now and then.

Mine was expired dl. I went to Northport city hall.
Told about the star, and if I wanted it id have to go to Skyland office.
Didn't know about it, and just got the dl renewed.

To my understanding, it doesn't cost extra, but my licence was only 15 days expired.

Still haven't received it in the mail though.
You'll have to pay the $23.50 now, and on 5/??/20 the $33.75 as that is your expiration date and you'll have to get a new one.

The crazy thing with getting the star DL is you have to have about two or three different documents . One you can use is passport but still have to have others. The others are what's required to get a passport . They won't take just a passport only, it's like the DAs don't know what's involved in getting a US passport . If you have a valid passport , you shouldn't need anything else to get the little star.

Tip: Bring every piece of identifying paper you own. Birth certificate, DL, SS card, passport. Nothing like getting turned away because you're one document short.

Gomer, I got one. The only trouble is the PITA dealing with the DMV - sitting through that for 2 hrs is always brutal. Otherwise it was no issue. TIFWIW: I had read that they will be required for international travel in the not too distant future (not sure if this is true or not!) and had to renew soon so I did it just in case!

I got mine last fall when my old DL was up for renewal.

It was no different than getting a new license. I had to provide some bills with my name and address on it plus I took my birth certificate and Passport.

With all the correct info it took me 3 trips. I learned that the same people are the ones that administer the new license drivers test. They are done first no matter in the order people arrive. Drivers test first. My first trip they told me was at least a 4 hour wait. 2nd trip was also a 4 hour wait. 3rd trip went closer to lunch and went right in.

My wife had to have her name legally changed before she could get one.

According to the sheet I have here. you have to have two documents. I won't list all of the possibles because the easiest for Gomer will be his passport and a utility bill less than 90 days old. Now if he would rather take his Sex Offender Registration Documents, he can.

Just go on the website, it tells you exactly what to bring, just like if you are getting the TSA precheck or a passport, it tells you what to bring.

I went when it was time to renew my license, I went to a state troopers office on Coliseum Blvd., for those of you in Montgomery, it hardly took me anytime. They took me straight back. I wasn't having to take a drivers test and all that. I got there a little early, and I even was able to help a young man study for his CDL while we waited for the doors to open.

It will help you if you travel. I believe all major airlines will be wanting it by October 1, 2020 will require you to have one or either have your passport with you.

According to the alea.gov website you have to have 4 documents. One for identity/date of birth (i.e. passport), one for social security number (i.e. social security card or W-2), and 2 for address (i.e. utility bills under 90 days old, Homeowners Insurance).

The parenthesis are just examples, there are other options for each type of proof. Sex Offender Registration is definitely one of them. Good grief

I figure when I go, I'll take a passport, current DL, W2, utility bill, copy of birth cert. and SS card. If they can't figure it out with that, then I'll just have to make do without.
