That’s horrible. Is the water at flood stage up there or has it settled down some? I’ve never fished up there before.

The water at Savannah has been real high/at flood stage for a long time now.

So many dont understand how dangerous the hobby is. Lots of safety measures need to be added to highschool fishing imo! Last tournament at lay 2 kids were ejected. It's only going to get worse if they dont make some changes.

Praying for them. That's just terrible.

I live next to pickwick lake . Boat was found 13 miles below dam at bridge in savannah tn. Dam is spilling over 200,000. Don t look good at all . River is not at flood stage now but it has major current. Guys boat had motor problems an was told he could fish using his trolling motor. Wrong thing to do in my opinion. Where they lauched boat very close to dam. No way a trollling motor keep you away from dam current so strong.

there’s no reason to hold a fishing tournament in a river right now.

Especially when teens are involved. I hate damn fishing tournaments.

I’m not sure what safety measures could be added. Unfortunately stupidity is more times than not the cause.

People think a boat is a toy and water won’t hurt if you know how to swim. Two biggest problems.

The biggest problem in my opinion is inexperience on different lakes. A lot of these accidents happen to people not familiar with the body of water in which they occur. I grew up fishing Smith. I can’t run the boat on Lay like I can on Smith.

Unfortunately it seems several bad decisions led to an accident or bad situation. The decision to fish in a lake with the amount of rainfall recently will probably be second guessed and should be. The decision by the "team" to fish in a boat that was experiencing engine troubles is also troubling and was not a good one. The decisions made once on the lake may never be known but prayfully the fishermen will survive and be able to tell all. And I am still baffled that no one noticed they were missing for at least 24 hours. Some times a bad accident happens and there is nothing anyone could do to avoid it, but many times a series of bad decisions leads to a bad outcome. This may be a case of the latter.

Pickwick must be some kind of dangerous. Didn’t a high school team swamp a boat there a year or so back?

They are all dangerous, but more dangerous is the dads driving 75 mph on a lake they have not been to in 3 years during the winter when we have had record rains and huge floaters are all over the lakes. Then they have to fish because suddenly it has become a big high school sport somehow so they take stupid chances to beat the other kids dads fish he found. I hate highschool fishing, I am shocked they have not had a bunch of deaths. Last year at lay lake they asked half the field to put in before daylight and run up the lake to another ramp that alone is terribly dangerous.

They could start by canceling some of these tournaments when the water is in bad shape.

this. A flooding river is nothing to fool with any time of the year but especially winter

Absolutely

They could also cancel winter tournaments as cold water is deadly. They could enact speed limits or horsepower limitations when students are fishing, they could eliminate blast offs and allow teams to start where they want after daylight so no one is racing each other in low light conditions

I’ve fished a lot of tournaments out of the other end of the lake... and I’ve never seen a college or high school tournament where several boats
Ripped the lower units off or rocked holes in the hull...
water scares me when it gets uncontrollable I’m out
