Shorter season? Meh. But the North zone doesn't need to be hunting in Feb. The South zone, they have a good argument with data to back up Feb hunting.
For those that haven't been keeping up, per the .minutes from the last CAB meeting our season being extended on the front end sounds like a done deal. The data (what ever that is) has been collected and it's just doing it. That's the info. Form your own opinion. Do you ever pay ANY attention to the states in the midwest or north or west that have a larger herd of mature deer AND MUCH, MUCH shorter seasons? Another surprise is that they have check systems that most all of the hunters use and their conservation departments actually use that data. Another surprise is that fines for violations are serious enough to get the attention of offenders. See a pattern here vs Alabama? Because I don't hunt out of state. 1. how long have they had a check system in place, probably longer than 3 years 2. watched north woods law recently, caught a guy shooting robo deer from the road and on posted land fine at end of show $248, don't see that breaking any bank accounts. 3. how long are their seasons and their buck limits. We can't get mad at the state for hunter non compliance with game check and then not using the data that we the hunters will not provide. Been posters on here saying they will not us game check but the vast majority will report. However a buck limit is a good start and then the season can be as long/short as you want it to be within reason Don't know the answers.

Honestly, I could hunt November and January and be content. I could be missing something but seems like it’s winding down here by Jan. 31.
I still haven’t killed a deer in February. I used to think our peak hunting was Jan 15 but I think it’s around Jan 23-25 now.

Go out west and break a game regulation. In the 80s an illegally killed elk was $2500 for first offense, deer was $1500, (typically loss of license and confiscation of weapon, jack with them and you would lose the vehicle and a visit to the house to see what else you’d been up to) each salmon was $1000. Some states will bust that arse quick and make you pay big time.

i have seen a buck chasing a doe in middle april. leaving the national forest after being down that way all weekend. saw a doe haul azz across the road, waited to seee what was behind it. a decent buck not a monster.
if i hadnt taken up hunting i might have became a juvenile delinquent or worst taken up GOLF

I would be fine with a split season on north AL, Oct 15-Nov 31 Bow ONLY and Jan 1 - Jan 31 gun season, I think that would be mostly ideal for most of north AL. BUT, I also understand that would F things up for the area that 257 is in which has a VERY different rut timing than NE AL. I don't hunt much in Dec anyways so it would'nt really change things for me, but I do think "MOST" of Alabama has too long of a gun season and way to liberal doe harvest. Y'all may disagree, and I'm fine with that.

I,m with you jwalker 77, some does are still having fawns in October in Blount co. and there's more buck sign in February than any other time. Same as where I hunt in Marshall County. We needed the extended season and could use a few more days maybe until February 15 or so. The season doesn’t need to open until mid November because all the does have tiny spotted fawns still with them during bow season. A few years ago on thanksgiving morning I seen a spotted fawn that wouldn’t weigh 8-10 pounds.

Plus additional $250 for damage of the decoy, and loss of license for one year. They also could have hit him with two more violations, but he was polite and honest so they went easy on him. I saw that episode too.
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

Friend of mine has a photo of an 8- or 10-point buck at GSP from last weekend and that sucker's fit as a fiddle. Doesn't look worn down from any rut activity and tarsals weren't nasty.

you people that have never and will never hunt south Alabama, still have no clue what you’re talking about when it comes to season dates in the southern part of the state.
Everyone opposed to February hunting lives up north. I hunt 2 counties that border Florida. You guys up north should spend one season hunting December and the first half of January in Covington County. You would change your mind. I would give up all of December to hunt all of February. Im not opposed too shorter seasons. It does seem like it lasts forever, but when it's about to get exciting down here it ends.

It's interesting, too, that Florida's D-zone goes through the end of the month. Bama's southernmost counties probably could do the same?

Believe it or not but the deer down here act WWAAYYYYYY different. Maybe it’s due to pressure. You’ll rarely see a mature buck outside of “rutting phase” around here. Until you spend a few seasons in extreme south Alabama, you probably won’t understand. I started back hunting Mississippi this season and I’m in a good size club with very few members. I’ve never seen so many bucks in daylight hours. It’s very foreign to me but I imagine this is how it is in central and north Alabama.

I would be tickled if they would let the south end of the state have no deer hunting till about Dec 15 and let the season run from there till Feb 28 or so. Everybody wants to hunt the rut, even those of yall in north Bama where the rut is earlier in the year.

What blows my mind is people think deer have to be in rut before you can kill them Oh buT iT is ExCiTinG tO hUnt tHe RuT!!! It's kind of sad, really. The biggest thing the peak rut and chasing do is cause a buck to be less wary, and thus easier to kill. Which means that it seems a lot of hunters just want it easy. No offense but maybe your looking at it wrong at least for some of us rut hunters... The only time I don't see the same deer over and over is during the rut. I could care less if it's easier or not. I just like the real CHANCE of seeing something different and hoping its full of horns. I don't have access to huge acreage where I can hunt a specific deer. I have to hunt whatever crosses my little 3 acre field or my 2 acre creek bottom.
