Of all the things we could be fussing about...

Feed the kids. Hell make it free for everyone of the kids that want it, especially those who need it.

My point was not made to say don't feed the kids, just don't pay the parents to feed them and then feed them through the school system. Double dipping is not helping the children only the parents.

I guess all I can say is that you are fortunate to not have had a run of bad luck. Sometimes bad things happen (medical bills, deaths, layoffs, etc) that totally change the financial situation of families.

I think the system is taken advantage of, no doubt. But to stereotypically place the blame on all the parents or to ensenuate that these situations are totally unavoidable (at the expense of the child) is just not how I think.

Don't make assumptions. You have heard what making assumptions does, right?

I've had plenty of bad luck and grew up poor as hell. I've made good decisions that help me when things go bad. And I'd rather lick Obama's arse than beg a penny of help from anyone.

Great post Andrew!! I don't post very often but this topic hit me wrong. My mom was a lunch room manager in Marshall county for over 20 years and some of the stories she has told me will break your heart. The meals that these kids recrive could be the only hot meal they get for the day.

Very good point. Its not the kids fault, and there are much bigger problems to focus on.

EVERYBODY goes thru hard times...I would NOT fault anyone for using Federal Aid when needed...Its the ones who abuse and think Federal Aid is a career....

NOBODY on here says to NOT feed the kids...Just get some handle on the abuse that takes place...but actually the REAL abuse takes place within the administration thats supposed to monitor it...farm subsidies...etc...same reason we're burning corn in our cars and ruining engines...wonder when the 'Beloved leader" bans sales of all combustion engines?...except for his use

but Mochelle gonna fix a lot of that...especially childhood obesity cause kids aint gonna eat what shes trying make the schools give them...Now Im not a fan of the pizza line, the burger and fries line, ice cream everyday...When I was in school, you ate what was they were serving or went hungry...Soup days....blechhh...But if wanted lunch...there it was...

But feeding the kids shouldnt make a truly needy parent choose between school lunch and the light bill...But it also shouldnt be extra crack money either....

My mother worked 2 and 3 jobs to keep us in clothes and fed while my father was in prison. I was embarrassed to get a reduced lunch ticket until she told me,"I am doing all I can,you be proud of who you are, we will get past this! The fact we are poor doesn't change who we are." She worked her ass off and now owns 2 homes and was rewarded by God and men for her effort. She made over $100,000 a year at least 8 years prior to retiring. For ICOT to say never have kids if you can't pay for them, is an insult! You sir are an arrogant, Ignorant ass if you don't think LIFE happens. I hope and pray for your sake, you never have to realize how insulting what you said truly is.

My wife is a first grade teacher and tells stories of kids that break my heart because I was that kid. When she takes extra from home to give to a child that eats his lunch like a ravaged animal and LICKS his plate because he is still hungry... DONT TELL ME THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! Is it being abused DAMN STRAIGHT!!!!! But for that child a free lunch and breakfast might be all he gets. (They were able to get the lunch people involved and give him adult sized portions just in case ANYONE cares) They have even started a Backpack Buddies program (my church gives to it) to send home snacks for those that they know are hungry. This is in Shelby county, God only knows what it must be like in Greene of Perry...

The parents might be free loading pieces of crap and might be raising their kids to be the same, but until you are willing to be part of a solution, why complain about the problem? Best answer I ever heard was from a PRO-CHOICE candidate for office who was booed by the PRO-LIFE crowd. He asked for 2 minutes to explain his position. He asked who is against abortion, room full of hands go up. He then asked who is currently registered to be foster parents or awaiting a child for adoption... no hands go up. He then said, while I am not for abortion, I realize that a fetus is a child, I would rather that child not grow up unwanted and uncared for than for it to be here and neglected by its parents and those that claim to care enough for it to be born yet take no action on its behalf for a better life... and the room was silent !!!!

---Kinda a side story, I was doing a weather safety talk at an Elementary school once and was asked to eat lunch with the kids afterwards. I accidental knocked a kids tray out of his hands. The look on his face was pure and utter devastation. Of course I bought him another lunch. When I returned with it, he asked me if he could take the food on the floor home for dinner.

BP, I couldn't be more in agreement with your opinion on this one.
This kid you described is not uncommon in Alabama. In our area, there are church groups sending food home with some of the school kids on Friday so they will have something to eat over the weekend. I don't understand the parents at all, but I do understand the need to feed the children. It's not their fault.

God bless the kids!

I'm proud for her, she did what she needed to do keep her kids clothed, fed and sheltered. Good for her and you

I'm none of the above, what I am, is a realist. EVERYBODY,goes through hard times and has to make tough choices in life. It' the people that DON'T get off their asses, to make something of their life, that I have a problem with. If you can't feed little Johnny and are having to get help to feed him, then don't turn around and have MORE kids. THOSE are the people I have an issue with and are a burden on society.

That 1st sentence, tells you it's broken. I won't help people, that aren't willing to help themselves first. I've been through hard times in my life, but I always make sure my kid is fed til full, clothed, gets to see the doctor and has a roof over her head. If it means I get one meal a day, than so be it, it's what I do. It's the PARENTS responsibility to take care of their child, not strangers, not the government. Everybody goes through rough spots, it's the decisions they make while in a rough spot, that defines who they are. I have no issues, with kids getting free meals, at school, when their parents can't afford it and are doing everything they can to improve their child's and own quality of life.

Tmac, thank you for sharing your story. True need really isn't the issue with me and some on here. It is the ever expanding federal spending and the abuse within it. However, what you wrote on the meals should shed light on the fact that there is true need out there, even in Shelby county.

The quote above, though, is quite alarming to me. If that is the best answer you have ever heard, then you need to go hear more answers. So killing an unborn child is acceptable because that child MIGHT grow up unwanted...MIGHT be uncared for...MIGHT be neglected...MIGHT be abused??????? That is the best answer you have ever heard????????? That is the worst answer I have ever heard and I can guarantee you that the room would not have been silent if I was there.

Life is sacred, even the unborn. Life is given to us by God and God knows us even in the womb...he stitched us together there and he has plans and purposes for all of us until He calls us home. For the overly arrogant they think they can play God and decide who is worthy of life and who is not based on what MIGHT happen. It is better to suck out the baby in a tube and dispose of the baby (not tissue) as medical waste? Can't the world see how truly perverted that is? Picture standing before God Almighty and explaining why aborting a child was acceptable. Listen to God as he explains the purposes and plans He had for that child. Then tell God that He is wrong and that mankind knows best.

For that man to say "he wasn't for abortion" and then to describe the social acceptability of it is disgusting to me. It is impossible to know if any child will be unwanted, uncared for, neglected or abused prior to its birth. Yet that is the solution from this man...and YOU think that was the greatest answer you have ever heard? Your story was touching, but the last part makes me sick to my stomach to be perfectly honest with you. Those that remained silent in that room make me sick as well.

And for the record, since it is so important to you, I am part of the correct solution to unwanted, uncared for, neglected and abused children.

Gimme a break. Nobody thinks kids should not eat. The frustration is with the parents that don't have there priorities straight.

My problem is helping folks that think owning a big screen, new car, ipod, 1700 satellite channels, and a smart phone are God given rights. More times than not folks have additional ways to decrease their cost of living, but choose not to because they "deserve" to have those things.

I saw an article where a woman in Georgia was being interviewed because she was receiving assistance on her power bill through Georgia Power. In her living room she was standing there with a 50" (approx.) flat panel tv and a video game system right below it.

Why that pisses me so much is that I don't have a flat panel tv, game system, ipod, smart phone, cable tv, etc. I don't have these things not because I can't afford to have them, I just choose to save my money instead. Somehow if tax payers are going to be asked to foot the bill, there needs to be checks in place to ensure that "free money" isn't being misused. You might as well be buying homegirl and new tv and game system instead of paying her power bill....you might as well be buying beer and cigarettes for mom and dad instead of food for the kids. I don't have the solution, but ENABLING people to keep there priorities out of wack is definitely not going to work.

It would be broken IF that child didn't get a lunch! It IS being abused. If what my mother did years ago was to happen today, we would be screwed! There are not enough jobs for people thanks to a crappy economy.

I agree that people should work and not be given a lifetime of handouts, but some have suggested they work in schools.... who is gonna do background checks on them? No telling what past criminal records some of them might have, drug dealers, pedophiles, rapist, God forbid.

I admire you for sacrificing if need be for your family, but there are lots of people out there sacrificing and it still isn't enough. Thank God that at least the kids can get a meal at school.

I agree, They shouldn't be rewarding getting more $ from the government for having another child, but until that problem is fixed, that doesn't feed an hungry child a meal.

I'm not picking at you. You're right everyone goes through hard times. However, it's not the Federal governments job to help them. That's the traditional roles of neighbors, family and the churches.

Federal government not only has not business doing it, they have no constitutional authority to do it either.

Straycat, I didn't say I agree with his position, I said it was one of the best answers I ever heard. Especially in an environment where he was strictly outnumbered. I disagree with abortion personally and disagree with government paying for a woman to have an abortion.

I admire you for being part of the solution!!! That was not the end of his speech, but he didn't get my vote. I used that as a simple illustration of how many will complain but few take action.

I completely agree that God will judge us for the actions of our Country and our lack of response to what is socially acceptable. That quote wasn't meant to be about abortion, just an example of the lack of those willing to put walk to their talk.

Dont disagree, but I don't see too many churches stepping up to the plate. Seems we(church) are more concerned about missionaries in Africa and South America that those in our own backyard. I also think we have lost the "neighbor helping neighbor" mentality that this country used to have. I think that is because the government intended to take power away from the church, but thats a whole different issue.

Spot on correct. The Progressive Movement has corrupted our government and governments goal transformed into making people look toward the "givernment" for their common everyday needs and wants. The invention of the social and welfare programs by gov't took over the role that had been primarily taken on by the church and individuals on a community level....the role of helping hand. Sadly, the church and individuals then took a step back and today they just fill in the gaps somewhat.

I would disagree. There are church based ministries, shelters, food banks, outreach organizations all over every city and town with any decent sized population. If someone is hungry in Bham, there is food available from multiple sources. Same for most towns. The poorest of the poor areas of the state have a lot less ministries for sure. But I know of at least 8 churches that have ongoing food and medical ministries in the blackbelt. The facts are that Adults and children in the USA do not die from starvation, nor is there an epidemic of shortage of food where kids or adults are diseased and malnurished from lack of food. That is the rule, with a few exceptions I'd think. When is the last time we saw a community with the kids having distended bellies from lack of food to eat? We don't. We all know poor families get aid for food from the government, but there are many churches doing the same work on the ground. But I do agree there are more churches that need to get involved...if every Christian church did that then there would be a great change.

Africa is a different situation. Thousands die each year from the utter lack of food. There are many reasons for that too, notably gov't corruption and political turmoil and wars. Private aid to those areas can save lives on a weekly basis.

Oh yeah...they have a plan for Churches...see where Barry and DOJ Musketeers want to remove tax free status?

And although I feel for the plight of the African people, no amount of money is going to fix that place...sorta like Somalia...Wonder how many of the now Pirates were fed by the USA in the 80s?

My church started a program last year where we assemble weekend meals for kids who are most likely not getting food over the weekend as a result of their family situation.

My wife oversees it at the school, and at some point in time I asked her if the kids were embarassed to be taking food home for the weekend. To my surprise, she told me that those kids were excited to know that they would have food over the weekend.

The welfare society has destroyed this country over the past 50 years, and it began in earnest with the Great Society in the 60's.

I had a conversation with my Sunday School teacher last night, who started his career fighting fires with the Feds in the Appalachain mountains. When I brought up the notion of the cash crop mentality in WV and KY, he told me that the new generation of welfare recipients in the mountains are too lazy to grow weed and they now just shake and bake meth. Sad, sad world.

I guess I just don't get it - for me personally, I spend less than $1/day for my breakfast and lunch combined M-F. How somebody can say they don't have that, knowing that if they are in that dire of a situation, they are probably getting some kind of government assistance is beyond me. Is it crappy food? Probably, and definitely by the standards of most folks on here. But, it is food, it is almost the same diet I ate during college and grad school, but it was and is sufficient; I am not starving by any means.

My wife gets up and packs lunches for our kids and I would guess that we do not spend over $12/week on their food combined and probably 25% of that cost is the milk my daughter buys everyday from the cafeteria.

Some people are taught how to fill out forms to get free stuff. At Schools for lunches, at the Social Security offices, at the Health and Human Services, WIC, etc. etc.
