In the last 12 years on one large property we made at least 30 mineral sites. What we learned is what we thought were some good spots were not according to the deers usage. Most of them we cleaned a spot and put some clay down. They all will get some attention but out of the 30 we have about a dozen that get worked on really well. So we now just concentrate on the heavier used ones.
Interested in trying this over the spring and summer on my place too. Planted corn last year and it dried up before it ever put many ears on, the deer still hit it pretty hard for what little was there, but I would like to add a couple of mineral sites this year. How many sites would you do per 100 acres, and what do you all use to make your sites.
if it was mine id make 4 sites and see which 2 they utilized the most. We always started ours with one white and one brown mineral block. When you find out which the 2 best ones are put a white, a brown and a trophy rock in to refresh them.
Pool salt works well also and you can catch it on sale at wal mart at the end of summer for $2 - 2.50 clearance for a 50# bag.
