Think about it for a minute. If deer season were open year round right now would you go hunting for deer?
Odds are you would go squirrel or rabbit or quail hunting or fishing, but rabbit/squirrel aint open right now either.
If you were a landowner would you like to see the gubberment get out your business and let you hunt and work your land the way you want too?

If the season is not needed to protect the species, you are probably right.

I believe rabbit season is open year round in Florida. They still have rabbits.

Hog season is open year round...we still have hogs and probably more now than ever.

Coyote season is open year round and we seem to be getting more and more of them as well.

Interesting idea. Not going to happen, but interesting.

Several years ago I talked with a DNR deer biologist from another state. He believes their doe harvest declined - and I think had some numbers data to support it - when they expanded their "doe days" season.

Before, he said, there were only X-number of days for hunters to kill does. They knew that and targeted them during that period.

After expanding the days, hunters said, "Eh, I don't want to fool with it tonight." ... "I have to be at work by 10 a.m." ... "I have Little Johnny and don't want to mess with a doe today." ...

They put it off because there was no urgency. When it came time to "buck hunt" during their peak rut, there were no does killed. Then the season ended.

In effect, there was no dangling carrot to chase with the expanded seasons vs. the short period.

If you have four hours to mow the yard on Saturday morning before T-ball, consumes the afternoon, you don't mow on Sunday and then work all week ... chances are good you'll mow the yard.

I don't think I would want to be in the woods in July or August when it's 98 outside...Not to mention all the bugs and snakes.

I doubt it would have that much effect on small game populations. It would be interesting to see what would happen if all seasons and bag limits were removed on all small game species. Give me a chance to vote on it and I'd vote for trying it for a few years to see. Of course, it will never happen.

In many places in AL, it wouldn't make much difference with deer and turkey either. Places controlled by large landowners and large clubs would probably manage things as well, if not better, than the state. Where it would be really detrimental to the populations would be in the areas made up of small landowners. I suspect you'd see both deer and turkeys virtually wiped out from some places. I couldn't vote for that.

Go back and see what happened during the Great Depression.

Probably wiped out a lot of game during the great depression. People were hungry and in those days, people were more important than animals.

In another great depression, I imagine a lot of game would be wiped out again no matter what the season dates are.

Looks like those who wrote our game and fish laws were thinking along those same lines preacher:

Quote:
(b) The commissioner is empowered to do all of the following:

(7) To close the season of any species of game in any county or area when, upon a survey by the department, it is found necessary to the conservation and perpetuation of such species and to reopen such closed season when it is deemed advisable.

If we opened squirrel season year round, I think there would still be plenty of squirrels.

Anybody ever been around someone with a depredation permit for deer? I have and let me tell ya... unless your starving to death you don't want nothin to do with a deer in Aug. That's a mighty rank creature in the summer.

I do basically the same thing now. I don't shoot does, probably been 5 years since I shot one and that was because the land owner in KY ask me to shoot one with my bow. I pass on a lot of them until one day I see one and every thing is right, not neccessarily rack size or age, I shoot him. The T ball problem went away more years ago than I like to think.

I think that would be a grand ideal have no closed season and no bag limits and allow hunting everyday on public land at the WMA's and any other public land that is open to hunting. Just let each individual manage the way he wants

It don't have to be one extreme or the other.

Individuals can manage wildlife any way the want within the lawfully set seasons and bag limits.

Government can take care of the conservation part and individuals can take care of the wildlife management part.

That's how it's set up in our laws now, but there are some liberals around who are trying to redefine the law.

49er management is part of conservation. You cannot conserve unless you have the ability to manage. That's like telling someone they can drive then saying that it's against the law to touch the steering wheel.

Here is a definition that is used for conservation.

official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management.

You can't conserve without manageing. How can you conserve water if you don't manage it.

It is perfectly legal to set up seasons. That is preserving and protecting.

The definition I heard in college was "Conservation is wise use without abuse". The buck managemnt program is getting very close to crossing the line imo.

Most of our conservation laws were codified around 1940.

If you look at the laws defining the functions and duties of the DCNR, the word "management" was not used where authority was delegated to protect wildlife. The intent of the law was restoring wildlife populations and protecting those populations.

Here's what the deer population looked like at the time our game and fish law were written. I don't think anyone had sex ratios and age structure in mind when they mentioned conservation in the law.
