Soft pressure with cleaning agents to break loose growth and stains. I've seen before and after and it was noticeably cleaner.

The stain is an algae growth and will come back. I believe most shingles are now made with something embedded in them that helps prevent this algae growth.

If you used a dimensional or architectural shingle it should be algae resistant. Especially if it’s only 7 years old. If that’s the case, most manufacturers algae resistant warranty is 10 years and should be covered by the manufacturers warranty. That means that if you file a claim with the manufacturer they will pay to have the roof cleaned.

I had this done and it definitely cleaned up the stains and algae areas. Granted my roof is 20+ years old, so at this point I'm just doing what I can every year to keep it going and looking decent. It did still wash a good bit of granules off though even w/out high pressure being used.

Down here in South Florida the new trend is roof washing with chemicals where they used to pressure wash. Got away from pressure washing to avoid damaging Spanish roof tiles. Only type of roof cleaning we can find down here now. It cleaned the roof alright with lots of chemicals that killed grass and bushes around house. Man had to use a respirator so it can't be too good to breathe in. Down here with tile roofs we have no choice but to clean roofs every 2 years minimum.

IMO I wouldnt apply any form of chemical, pressure wash, or scrubbing to an asphalt shingle roof if I werent OK with shortening its lifespan. It might make it look better but I personally wouldnt do it but if I was absolutely set on it I would only use a chemical wash and rinse with no pressure or scrubbing, anything that can potentially remove the grit is bad the grit keeps UV rays from eating away at the asphalt.

There is a product, pretty expensive, I picked up from ace hardware that does a good job. Apply it and hose off. I think it's $40 gallon though. I went through 2 gallons on 20 squares ...
