I want to first thank Matt ( 257 ) for extending an offer to hunt his farm. I have not had a great year as far as harvesting a buck. I only try to shoot mature bucks and through a lot of luck I have been able to every year here in Alabama for the last 16. This year it looked like I just wouldnt, after passing on a bunch of bucks including a few 3 year olds that I was sort of regretting. As we eat only wild game, I needed to harvest a deer to fill the freezer, however I hunt one of the lowest deer density areas in the State and we do not shoot does here. Matt told me to come on up and hunt with him and his son on doe patrol so I eagerly accepted. Matt and his son picked me up and we drove to his farm. As we reached the gate I asked him to clarify the situation on bucks. What was I to do if a mature buck stepped out? He said "heck we are here deer hunting...shoot it!" I told him Id only shoot 4 year old or older 8 points or better, but I warned him....I am a really LUCKY hunter. It is WHY I get a good one every year. Luck of the Irish...but Ive hunted other peoples land a few times and it seems I always shoot a monster my first time there. However, being after the rut and 62 degrees Im sure he wasnt much worried. We pulled in and he sent me to a really nice shooting house and he and his son went to another. First thing that surprised me was that all his fields were all Throw and Mow!  Actually...they werent. They were HUGE clover fields, and either he had a golf course crew coming here mowing every week..or A LOT of deer were here eating! With really nice shooting houses. Heck, yall have seen the homemade little ground blinds I make..so this was first class to me! About 4 O clock my first doe came out, then a small spike. The little doe went to the feeder and to my surprise she was the only deer that did. The rest all just came out and ate clover. While I was watching her I could have swore I heard grunting and chasing down in this big hollow. As more deer started filling the field I could hear it again, getting closer. I told myself I wasnt going to shoot until AFTER Matt's son did. I wasnt going to ruin a kids hunt by shooting and scaring off the deer. Matt has a silenced 308 they were using, so they could shoot and it wouldnt scare the deer. When I heard them shoot I was going to pop the biggest doe in the field. A number of does and young bucks started to come into the field. soon over 12 deer were out including a nice young 7 or 8 point 2 or 3 year old. Again I heard squirrels bark and even closer grunting and chasing. Much closer. I then saw all the deer look towards the woods behind me and out ran a BIG doe. After she got in 20 yards she turned and looked behind her. I immediately knew what was coming and stood up, turned around and tried to get ready to shoot that way. After that it was a 4 to 5 second quick rush. I saw the younger bucks all trot away towards the other side and glanced where she had come from and saw him coming out of that thicket....and heard him grunting, a big shooter! I got my gun out the window behind me just as she started running again and looked again to insure it was big and OLD enough...yep no doubt ..4 year old and big , wide and tall. As she started angling across the field he put his head down to follow but was still moving at a trot. I mehhed...he stopped for a second and I shot. He reared up on his hind legs like a horse then came back down and took a few steps and I shot again and he dropped. Man I was excited! What a hunt and what a buck! I then had to text Matt: "I told you what would happen!" The luck of the Irish. An Irish boy in a big clover field...had to be lucky! They had deer coming in too but only does so they shot one and we all met at his barn then went and got them both. It was a great time, great place and a great hunt. Best part was he and his son were both as happy as I was! A big wide 9 pointer and I kept my streak of at least one mature buck a year here in Alabama going!
