I didn't see a fox skwerl in Alabama until the late 90's and was so amazed to see them. I didn't tell anyone about them for years because I knew somebody would go in there with the purpose of killing them
My Dad told me about killing fox skwerls and pine martins when he was a kid


deadeye, our stories are similar. Hunted squirrels and rabbits exclusively up to adulthood. The first fox squirrel I ever saw was in the mid 80's in a Blount county river bottom. I had to do a double take at what in the hell it was. He was slightly larger than what I'm used to seeing and had a orange'ish color with a white face. Craziest looking thing I'd ever seen. I ended up mounting him.
On a different note, I did notice some of the rules and regs now call out the fox squirrel by name, at least in Bankhead NF. You can not shoot fox squirrels in the months of February and March in the forest. I deer hunted the forest today and could have shot a sack full of grays.
