The OP is probably remembering fox sqwerls. I've seen less and less of them. I have a solid black one in the freezer I picked up off of the dirt road that goes to molettes bend from CR2 in Dallas County a few years back. Those northern red sqwerls are bigger than the grey ones, but not as big as a fox sqwerl. No sir. I'm talking about the American Red Squirrel. Pic below.
