I haven't seen one in a while. All I see anymore is grays with an occasional fox squirrel. I can remember many years ago seeing a lot of them and have shot a few of the little things. They were notorious for giving away your location and would just sit there and bark.

Red squirrels are not a native species to Alabama. Fox squirrel, Eastern Gray Squirrel, and the Southern Flying Squirrel are the only three species of squirrels.

I've never seen a red squirrel in AL other than a fox skwerl.

Used to be some red ones around here and some black ones too according to my uncle, he calls the black ones mississippi squirrels. Ive seen the red ones, not the black ones.

Is this what you are talking about? There is one mounted in our old camp house that was killed by one of the old members. Never seen a squirrel like that before nor have I seen one like it on our place. I call that a fox squirrel. They’re everywhere in my stomping grounds of Mississippi.

Our “Fox” squirrels down here are grey just like the little grey squirrels. Just a lot bigger. We call them little bitty grey squirrels “cat” squirrels.

I got a pic of a squirrel with big pointy fuzzy ears last year sitting in a tree, it looks like the squirrels in the pics when you google red squirrel. Not a great pic though.

Them jokers are everywhere. Haven’t seen a fox squirrel in 3-4 years.
