I think its shear numbers. Yes, abductions/slave trade have gone on forever...but there are so many people now.

Sometimes they run off like a recent relative that was suppose to show up for work. She didn't even pack or carry any clothes. She's in her 20's ran off with a boy with 3 kids by 3 different women in early 20's. No call to parents for a while could have been kidnapped as far as parents knew. Teens do it all the time too that is what is so scary.

I don’t care if it’s just publicized more. It’s still too often, and unnerving.

You have to parse the numbers. Much of it is teens running away and eventually coming back. Some do it to get attention. You never hear when it's something like that. Parental obductions are much the same. Women leaving bars with men they don't know is also prevalent.

Much of it is electronics and social media. We've given criminals a straight path to the kids and there is no parental buffer now. The social media also contributes to faster spread of information. People routinely post a missing child alert that's 5 years old and long ago resolved. It just keeps cycling and never goes away.

True abductions aren't as common as some believe. One is too many though.

He's right you know. The murder rates in cities like New York and Los Angeles are way down from that time period. Just more people with more media platforms to bump their gums about the violence.

As many murders as Chicago has, it is less than a third of what they had yearly in the 1970s.

“Missing”? I bet lots of folks reported as missing are just adults not sharing their business with friends and family.

It is just a social media thing. It happens no more often than when I had to approve the reports. Like Fatty said, kids get mad at their parents and runaway, usually for a few days. Spouses get mad and leave in a hurry all the time too. Little kids wonder off from home and panicked parents call the police. Drunks/Drug Abusers go on binges. Alzheimer patients wonder off. Non custodial parents take the children without knowledge of the other parent. These incidents nowadays make it to social media before the police are contacted and the missing person is located before LE is even aware of the situation. This is when Social media can be used for positive outcomes.

Rarely is a child or anyone Kidnapped by a stranger, but the social media posts make it seem like a daily occurrence because there is no followup on what really happened.

Excellent post. I read a very interesting article once that broke down the numbers on missing person reports. I wish I could find it. As Fatty said a bunch of these missing people are teens that run away. And get this, lets say a teen runs away and is found and returned home. A month later they run away again and then are either are found or return on their own. Then 2 months later they run away again. Each time the parents report this to the proper authorities. Guess how that whole ordeal goes down in that years statistics? Yep, 3 missing person reports even though they all invovled the same person running away 3 times.

Also a bunch of child abductions are by one side or the other involved in a bitter custody dispute who just decide to take the kids and skip out. Abductions by complete strangers do of course happen but are comparatively much rarer.

But we Americans love to scare ourselves with horror stories of fake church vans cruising our neighborhoods looking to abduct women. Or people trying to get women to sniff perfume swatches in mall parking lots that turn out to be soaked in chloroform. Every time I go on facebook I see about 5 warnings of some new elaborate scheme that some sex trafficking ring has supposedly come up with cart all our women off to a whore house in Guatemala. I think most of it is just pure bul###it.

The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.

My wife keeps a close eye on me while walking across parking lots. She's afraid I will get abducted by a van load of Victoria's Secret models and have my sex trafficked. grin

FBI statistics report that there were 23,500 missing children reported to the National Center for missing and exploited children (NCMEC) in 2018, of those, they believe 1 in 7 were victims of child trafficking. That equates to +/-3,357 children believed to be involved in sex trafficking in 2018. FBI 2

Those numbers are NOT from social media. 3,357 isn't a large number referenced against the overall population of our country; but it is a large number when referencing child sex slaves.

In just an 11 day period running Jan-Feb of 2019 (Super Bowl weekend) the FBI reports there were 169 arrests made involving sex trafficking in the Atlanta area. FBI link

Rather those children were originally taken against their will or started as runaways really doesn't matter. Personally, I consider 1 child involved in any sex trafficking to be one to many. Anyone who would lay a hand on a child, should spend the rest of their days in prison.

Of course social media exacerbates the gravity of those #'s; that is simply what social media does. Although those kids were not abducted by the boogeyman in the white van with the chloroform on a napkin, the fact remains that they are abused and it should be a focus of our efforts to stop it from happening to even one more child.

The vast majority of sex trafficking that does go on in this country are not people abducted here and taken somewhere else but instead women from other countries who are smuggled here. Many are being exploited by the people who smuggled them in and forced to work as prostitutes. The Facebook memes of gangs of sex traffickers roaming about in vans trying to snatch someones blonde blue eyed 17 year old daughter as she drives to school so they can sell her at a middleastern slave auction are almost entirely the product of urban myths and bad Liam Neeson movies.
