Name the company

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.

I thought a bonus is a gift, and not an entitlement.

While the execution of giving him the gift is alittle odd, he's still going to be 700$ richer than he was yesterday.
I damn sure wouldnt ask anyone who gives me a gift to cover the fee's.
Any complaints over a gift is considered being ungrateful.

I understand him being grateful for the bonus even if it's automatically 30% smaller but the way the owner/manager handled it was also completely uncalled for. And not to mention if he didn't have overdraft protection and his bills got returned he could get put in a bad situation with insurance companies or utilities. Not a good situation to put anyone in.

being wishy washy with a gift kindof defeats the purpose. though its also good to live a few months paychecks ahead, so you don't have to fall victim to lifes pitfalls. next month may be an unexpected car repair or a sickness. work hard live below your means and it will be alot less stress in the next year.

Truth, but if the kid is in highschool or college working (or fresh out of college, even) it takes time to build up a nest egg, even just a couple months worth. Definitely easier said than done but worth all the temporary troubles for sure.

Bank should understand that and if he's a longstanding customer then should be no problem. For times like this is why I like knowing my banker by his first name.
