I thought I posted this the other day at 5AM but apparently never hit submit.

Starting in 2020, veterans with a service connected disability will have access to commissary and base exchange. They need to show their VA health identification (VHIC). I know that working on base as a contractor and now a civilian that there have been times I would have liked to be able to shop there but couldn’t until this. For others that don’t have easy access to facilities this won’t mean much. The bigger picture is that by increasing the number of eligible shoppers should allow them to keep the doors open for the service members who need it.

Nice gesture but as a country need to do more for our disabled vets.

They started that around Black Friday. And decided to make it permanent. The PX prices aren't that great. If commissary is like it was when I was in, their prices are very good.

While I agree with that position. You have to consider what constitutes a "disabled veteran".
For example, I know one girl in Montgomery who's entire tour of duty was 4 months in pearl harbor. She's rated over 50% disabled because she got pregnant and had to be discharged due to emotional trauma.

Perch you’re exactly right. PX and commissary sales have dropped over the years for various reasons. Since I moved off post a couple of years ago it’s not worth the drive for me to shop at the commissary. The prices are not that different for the most part and the quality of beef, chicken, and fish and better at places off post. The only thing I buy at the PX is some clothes here and there. They have finally started carrying a bigger variety of name brands which is why most people didn’t shop there. I usually get all of my under armor stuff there and I did buy a carhartt down jacket a few weeks ago. I think jacket was marked down from $99 to $45 and no tax. I always buy my more expensive stuff there Tv, computer, that sort of stuff. because there is no tax.

Outback I agree with you 💯. I think the big push is because the PX and commissary are losing business, if I understand correctly disabled vets will be allowed to use the class IV which is not in any danger of losing money or business.

I’m honestly not surprised. If you looking for Blantons, four roses or something like that you can forget it. They do have Buffalo Trace for $27.95

You have to catch the alcohol sales - when you do you can save a ton of money. Day to day prices don't save you much except sales tax.

I love the sale rack at our exchange. $6-8 shirts normally $20 or so. I wear them on the farm so poop and dirt don't ruin my good clothes. They also have guns and ammo here. Grabbed a pistol and did their scratch-off, 25% off my Sig

$36.00 and that includes tax. Big difference.

It starts in January 2020. The qualifying must submit application and pass a background check. The Commissary for sure is charging an extra 1.9% on the credit cards to offset this. Applicants are not eligible for the Military Star Card (credit card for active and retired) so Its advised to use cash or Star card as they are exempt from the surcharges.

Since hunting is not strictly an MWR function, its not known yet if applicants are eligible for the hunting programs. Base lodging will have a stricter preference policy.

Just so you know, the last bottles of Whistle Pig I bought at $45 per bottle, today I checked and they are $75.

I’m not sure what the long term game plan is but facilities seem to be jacking prices up. Security Forces are already recommending putting the BX’s and Commissaries on the perimeter so they don’t have to manage the applicants on base. My understanding is there will be deeper discounts for Star Card Holders which will bring the price down to pre-this deal.

The state you live in really will determine whether its a good deal or not. Here in Texas with stores like HEB and no tax, its cheaper off base hands down. Most big box liquor stores are about the same price too because they give a military and a cash discount.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of abuse of the veterans service connected disability system since the Iraq war time period forward.
Just as there is a LOT of fraud and abuse of the Social Security disability system.
