We duck hunt with Flagstaff in Arkansas every year. The owner had one in his new duck house last year. It is all hard floors and you can imagine the mud and dog hair. That little unit kept it cleaned up nicely. It was brand new so I don't know how the battery life is, but other than dumping it several times a day, I did't see any issues. I am sure in a normal house it would not need to be dumped but once a day as opposed to 3 or 4. I came home from that trip thinking it would be the best thing for our house (no carpet except small rugs) and the wife unit said negative. I don't recall the sq ft but the duck house had 2 bedrooms with 3 bunks each, large kitchen and a living room it operated in.
We have an older model we bought about 12 months ago. Battery life has been ok but our next one will have the mapping capabilities. Ours cleans about 1100 square foot of hardwood with 2 rugs and does a good job of keeping the dog hair at bay. It doesn't clean the rugs as deeply as the dyson vacuum so we still do that weekly. Better than sweeping it up every day IMO. But get a smart one that doesn't cover the same spot a million times.
We have a Roomba brand one. Hard a Shark brand I got at Sam's but it quit and I returned it for this. They pick up similarly but the Shark brand one was noticeably quieter.
I have a long (all the way to her waist) haired 9 year old daughter and my wife has shoulder length hair. The ONE TIME I ran it in the bathroom I had to cut hair off the rollers for 30 minutes.
Before we downsized we had a three story house. We had a roomba on each floor. They are awesome. When they die, I will be seriously looking at the Shark

We have the iRobot from Amazon that the kids picked out for my wife (their idea, not mine!) for her birthday. She was skeptical at first, but now she loves it. We shut the doors so it stays in the living room/dining room/kitchen for it's daily auto run (at 5am). It's usually wrapping up about the time we are leaving at 6:30 and heads back to the charger. The kids will stick it in their rooms in the afternoon and it takes about 10 minutes to do each of them.
9 out of 10, would purchase again.
