I know this post is old, but I am newer to the board...

I just want to add, I do agree with putting this dog down, I've done the same, and I know it is hard...Thing is I own 2 dogs that are registered and have papers on them... If you too own a dog like that, then you support culling of dogs just as me... Most of the thousands of dogs that have been culled to get you breed perfect over the years did not even bite a child...So if I am OK with that enough to send the paper work in on my dog, then I am also ok with culling a dg that bites my own flesh and blood...

Amen!

Bite one my kids or my wife and the dog will be dang lucky if I just give it away!

I make sure my dog knows who the boss is and I make sure he is submissive without hurting him. And he better not forget.

Ok I have kept out of this fight until now. Once again you know I was a Meter Reader for Alagasco for thirty two years. Also a part time mail carrier while in school.
Putting that dog down would be wrong. When I would walk up to a home to read a meter and saw a dog asleep in the yard I would whistle or caugh or just hollow. Make the dog knows someone is in his terriorty most of them they would be friendly like just waking from a nap. My children know that when I am asleep or working outside they know to let me know they are close by before approching me. Sometime someone has come up behind me and tap me on the shoulder and if I had a gun they would be dead and I would be sorry. The soward has two blades.

I agree with you Geezer. Wake a man up when he's sleeping and it's no different.

I'm sorry to hear that. But you did do the right thing. I have a 18mo old that loves dogs. We have a 8 yr old black lab and a 4 yr old white english bulldog. I love those dogs, but if they bit my son I would do the same thing.

BTW, I'm all for protecting your family. I feel you did what you thought was best to do. But I would still not get another dog.

Agreed.

I enjoy having pets and have since I was 2 years old, a wide variety from birds and turtles, to dogs, cats and fish.

But they're animals. Expendable, not human and replaceable. Loving, protective and great? Sure. But they're animals.

Sorry to hear about your Lab, Raven. You did what you thought was best for your family, which is the only thing at all that matters.

Our Yorkie will come out of a sleep snarling and snapping. Never bit anyone, but he can be a little bit Psycho when he is startled awake.

When he snaps out of it he looks ashamed.

Very sweet dog that's just not all there when he wakes up sometimes.

Of course even if he did bite I doubt he could break the skin.

I'm sorry for the loss. If he'd been a good dog I think I might have tried to find a home before putting him down. But I understand why it was done.

James, even though it was a difficult decision, it was the only option that you had. Now, your challenge will be to make certain that you son doesn't feel responsible for having to put the dog down. Something like that can stay with a kid for a long time. Not sure how you handled that, but I would have considered not telling my son that we had to put him down, and just left that he had to go to another home.

I say this, because my oldest son was bit in the head by my brother-n-laws Akita when he was only 9 years old. Very similiar situation, the dog was lying by the back door asleep and he had gone over to see his uncle. He startled the dog and the dog went for his face. He turned his head and ended up with 74 stiches in top of his head, fortunately for him, it missed his eyes. After a few days of isolation, his uncle decided to put him down. To this day, my son has issues with big dogs.

Good luck.

Got this off the news.

A youngster should never stare into a dog's eyes, tease a dog,
approach a chained dog, touch an off-leash dog, run or scream if approached by a loose dog, play with a dog while it is eating or touch a dog while it is sleeping. If a loose dog comes close, children should stand very still and be very quiet. Always ask a dog's owner for permission to pet it and let the dog sniff your closed hand before you start touching it.

I got bit by our boxer dog as a kid once. My dad told me to quit teasing him then, he can't be in the mood to play all the time. I eventually understood this and I enjoyed playing with the dog, he did bite a bit hard sometimes but it was never a threatening thing, he was just playing. Good fun. But this seems like a real danger & injury, sad smirk
