Why have we made killing a deer so damn complicated? I feel like I need a law degree just to figure out the damn regs this year. The State of Alabama will NEVER be able to regulate the deer population the way you, or I, or they want it regulated. It's too complicated a problem with too many variables to be controlled over too large an area.
It was easy when it was a buck a day, doe days were x-number of days, bow season was October 15 to November 23 or so, and it ended on January 31.
To those who say "buck a day" is lunacy, it balances out between the guy hunting one and the guy killing 8 or 10. Not everyone killed just one and not everyone killed 8 or 10. The "I know a guy who killed 16 one year and just cut the horns off!" is an outlier in the overall.
"Buck a day" gave you freedom of choice. "Doe days" meant you got that chit done in those two weeks or so. "Gun season" didn't include a special muzzleloader season or youth days or exemptions and carve-outs. Those with common sense and a desire for freedom of choice and liberty lost out to those wanting more regulations and laws, fees and imposing their "quality experience" on everyone.
I've been hunting since the late 1970s, starting in Greene County. In the last 12 years - ever since the 3-buck limit was mandated - I've heard more outright bitching, complaining, distrust and hatred of the DCNR and a desire for hunting to be easier and fun than ever before. And we get more added every year in some form or another, the latest being all this baiting crap (with a fee) and mandatory check in-out at WMAs every time you set foot on the property.
