I'm kinda all over the board right now on my thoughts.

Prices ranging from not too bad to quite a bit. Weights ranging from right at 5lbs(Kimber Hunter with sound deadening gunk removal) to 7.5lbs'ish.
Caliber wise I'm pretty well set on 270 or 280Ai, want something capable on North American game but not be unnecessarily rough on my shoulder.

Here's what I am looking at rifle wise, more or less follows price low to high.

Kimber Hunter 270Win $630ish delivered
Kimber Hunter 280Ai $810ish delivered
Nosler M48 280Ai $1400ish delivered
Barrett Fieldcraft 270Win $1400ish delivered
Montana X3 280AI $1400ish delivered
Maybe a Sako Finnlight in the mix also at $1,675ish delivered.

Of the list the Hunter and the Fieldcraft are where I see myself ending up...with my little water leak snafu the Hunter is looking extra appealing at $630 out the door.

From your list.

If you want a 280ai, go with the Nosler rifle.

I’ll call my guy and see if I can save you some $.

That’s a helluva good question and I think I may have just gotten an answer. I don’t think MRC is the problem at all. Looks like my buddy at the gun shop was ordering from a distributor or another shop because he’s not a licensed MRC dealer. According to text I just got from somebody in the know MRC will not ship factory direct to any shops unless they are in the MRC network.

There are no licensed MRC dealers in Alabama.

I would choose a Kimber Montana over the Hunter model. Of those you listed, I would choose between the Nosler and the MRC.

I know exactly where that store is but have never stopped in before. Right down the road from the Lodge cast iron store.

Agreed. Of those listed, the kimber Hunters are not in the same class of rifle IMHO. In fact, the Hunters don't belong on the list with the rest of those rfiles.

It’s still there, saw it 2 weeks ago. Been for sale for 10-15 years because it’s $4000

There’s a Ruger Hawkeye chambered in .280AI on GB I’ve had my eye on. Order a McMillan Hunter’s Edge stock and a Timney trigger and you’d have less in it than anything on your list other than the Kimber Hunter.

A hunters edge will run around $550 and has at least a 6 month delivery time.

Yup, pretty much SOP with McMillan...he never said he was in a rush and he could still use the rifle while he was waiting on the McMillan. Just tossing out another option out there that wasn’t the same old boring factory offerings. I’ll bow out of this conversation now, good luck on your rifle search Barrett, hope you find what your looking for bud. thumbup

I just have my wood stock rifles glass bedded. My Hawkeye 257 Roberts is bedded completely around the action and barrel channel. No worries about POI shift or weather affecting it.

Give it a little time, the 280ai bug will pass.

A 270 slinging some modern heavies with R26 is “close enough” you’ll never know the difference. And when your interest move on it’ll be a lot easier to move also.

In Barrett's rifle utopia, Barrett Arms would chamber the Fieldcraft in 280Ai and have the availability in a custom shop to make the serial number by birthday.
