I’m in the market for a newer truck and have found a few for sale from individuals,my question is will I pay the sales tax when I get my tag for it if I do buy from a private party?Looking at trucks in the $30-$35k range and just want to know what to expect if I do buy from a private party and not a dealership.

I think its 2 or 2.5% of the purchase price. You can google and find out. It will be listed on the state website

been a long time since I had an Alabama registration. but a piece of advice (cause I learned the hard way) if you have any chance of moving to GA don't buy a vehicle til you get here. they will charge you (essentially) the sales tax when you bring it in. sucks. I got hit twice in a year on that one.
plus they determine the value, not what you paid... communists.

Some folks avoid this by getting the bill of sale written out for much less than is actually paid. However, if you are financing the vehicle, the bank wants a bill of sale for the actual amount.

They go by book value where I live. If it was that easy folks would just say “$1” and no one would pay taxes.

In TN the vehicle sales tax is damn near the same as regular sales tax here. I think it was 7 or 7.5%. I could go just south of the state line and buy anything I wanted in Wal-mart at 5.5% tax. They have no income tax but they find ways to get around that minor problem.

In Tennessee and Georgia it's 7% on new or used but my tag only runs about $30 a year as opposed to Alabama where a $20k vehicle the tag was about $200 annually. The government is going to get theirs either way.

Funny, my bill of sales are cheap so screw em. None of their business what me and a seller agree on.
