Bourbon is generic and only means it was made in the United States. Tennessee Whiskey means a bourbon made in Tennessee. No, bourbon isn't generic. It is by federal law whiskey that made for U.S. consumption and must be: Produced in the United States Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn Aged in new, charred oak containers Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume) Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof. Tennessee whiskey by state law is filtered through maple charcoal. That is what makes it sweeter than bourbon. Tennessee whiskey, by the way it is made, actually qualifies it as bourbon, but they go one step further with the charcoal filtering process. If you look on the barrels they mark it as bourbon. We've done most all of the Bourbon trail tours and we've also done the George Dickel and Jack Daniels tours too. So, that's what I understood from all the tours we have done.
