Although it has been legally defined as a bourbon whiskey in some international trade agreements,[1][2][3] most current producers of Tennessee whiskey disclaim references to their products as "bourbon" and do not label them as such on any of their bottles or advertising materials. All current Tennessee whiskey producers are required by Tennessee law to produce their whiskeys in Tennessee and – with the sole exception of Benjamin Prichard's – to use a filtering step known as the Lincoln County Process prior to aging the whiskey. Beyond the perceived marketing value of the distinction, Tennessee whiskey and bourbon have almost identical requirements, and most Tennessee whiskeys meet the criteria for bourbon.[4]

On a federal level, the definition of Tennessee whiskey is legally established under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and at least one other international trade agreement that require it to be "a straight Bourbon whiskey authorized to be produced only in the State of Tennessee".

I'll side with the Counsellor. Folks at Woodford Reserve said there is federal law that dictates what can be labeled Bourbon.

I guess the tour guides at Woodford never got the memo.

The "Lincoln County Process" is an additional step to make Tennessee Whiskey. That is filtering it through maple charcoal prior after taking it out of the cask.

There isn't any think in any law that says bourbon has to be made in Kentucky.

Having said that, if you can't tell a difference in taste in Tennessee whiskey and Bourbon, the entire issue is lost on you.

My understanding was it could be made anywhere , but to be labeled Bourbon it must meet guidelines per federal law. I guess those you posted earlier, correct?

Yes, what doekiller posted was the correct classification of a "Bourbon".

Doekiller is correct. Tennessee Whiskey meets every requirement of the definition of bourbon, but bourbon is legally defined at the federal level, while Tennessee whiskey is a matter of state law. And Tennessee state law requires that to be considered Tennessee whiskey, it must be distilled within state lines and through a sugar-maple charcoal. That is why it is sweet as hell.

Tennessee whiskey is sour mash whiskey not bourbon. I've drank enough George Dickel in my lifetime to float a battleship. I rarely drink whiskey any more, but Dickel was my choice for about 40 years, I actually preferred the black label

JD does suck to me. Think it's because my BIL got me blind on it one time when I was about 14. George Dickel, well, I'm in that same battleship as ronfarmer. Don't drink much of anything other than beer now adays.
Did however get to try some Weller over the weekend. Apparently made by the same folks as Pappy. Got into quite a bit of it. It kicked me pretty well. I'd put it right up there with Blanton's.

No, bourbon isn't generic. It is by federal law whiskey that made for U.S. consumption and must be:

Produced in the United States
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
Aged in new, charred oak containers
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)
Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof.

Tennessee whiskey by state law is filtered through maple charcoal. That is what makes it sweeter than bourbon.

Tennessee whiskey, by the way it is made, actually qualifies it as bourbon, but they go one step further with the charcoal filtering process. If you look on the barrels they mark it as bourbon. We've done most all of the Bourbon trail tours and we've also done the George Dickel and Jack Daniels tours too. So, that's what I understood from all the tours we have done.

Doekiller, you know I'm just across the river. I'll be glad to bring the Weller!
