Get you an older set of Taylor Made. They are good clubs and after a few years they get pretty cheap.

I'm running a set of Titleist (sp?) cavity backs. Would love to have some blades, but I don't play enough to justify buying them. You can shape a ball with the blades like nobody's business.

If you are just starting out, cheap may be the way to go. Up to a certain point you won't know the difference anyway.

Go get a couple year old set of mizuno jpx’s and you’ll be set. My second choice would be ping’s.

Edit: the best club for the money is a set of srixon’s. They have come on strong in the last couple years. Look at a set of 585’s.

Find yourself a "Play It Again Sports" and go look there. You can get used name brand clubs at good deals there. I play with a set of forged Snake Eyes and some older Calloway woods I bought there on the cheap.

Some good suggestions on here so I’ll add this. Don’t go cheap on a putter. It’s like buying an inexpensive rifle and putting the money in really good optics.

Go find a nice set of Ping ISI or Ping Eye clubs. They are still some of the best golf clubs ever made. Then go take them to a professional golf store and have them fitted to you, have the angles and the lie adjusted on the clubs and then have them re-gripped.

Next find you an identical 6 iron off of ebay or similar place. Cut the grip off the club. Take some worm weights of various sizes and starting small drop them one by one down the shaft until the shaft is full of weights. Put some caulk in there to hold them all firmly in place. Now re-drip that club. Now you have a weighted club that is just like your "real" 6 iron.

Go out in your back yard everyday and swing that club for about 10 minutes like you are cutting grass with a sling blade. Focus on keeping your head down your left arm strait (If you are right handed) and finishing high and holding the finish for a second. Doing that will groove your swing.

I did exactly that and got down to a 13 handicap at our country club, which I thought was pretty good for an occasional golfer. i went to our pro for lessons and he took one look at my swing and said, "Your swing is great, we're not going to touch it, lets work on your short game." He attributed my nice smooth swing to using the weighted club.

Don't buy one of the store bought weighted clubs, they are way too heavy for what you are trying to do and that is groove your swing and develop repeatable muscle memory.

Oh... and get a 12 degree driver. Better to be shorter than your buddies and be in the fairway. A 12 degree driver puts more backspin on the ball and helps keep it straighter.

Agree about pings, that’s what I hit. I would change your order though, go get fit, find out what color dot he needs, and then find and buy that. The color of dot already has the lie angle adjusted for him, all that would need adjusting then is shaft length. I’m green +3/4” shafts

You can find a set of used name brands online for a reasonable price however you might have to pay shopping. If that doesn’t work, Top flight makes decent clubs that want break the bank.

Just get you a big Bertha. Like a Wilson 2000, and just use it. Hit hard to go far, just barely tap it to go short.

Get cheap ones because you will end up throwing them in the water or wrapping them around a tree. Hitting that little white ball straight is the most frustrating thing you will do.

Had a guy that plays almost every day tell me that until you can consistently hit in the 80s just use whatever clubs you can get your hands on. I tend to agree. You have to get the basics down first. No reason messing up a $1500 set of clubs when you can’t even keep the ball on the fairway.

There will be tons of used sets on Facebook marketplace and craigslist. I like taylormade

Decide if you want cast irons or forged. Forged has more feel and what I used to hit. Cast seemed dead in my hands. I’ve only had 3 sets of irons. Wilson Snead when I started. Then Hogan Apex 2 blades and in the mid 90s I bought Bridgestone cavity backed forged, slightly oversized which help with slightly off ball strikes. They also have graphite shafts.

I was around a 2 to 3 handicap at my best.
Not sure that it actually matters but I’d consider oversized irons if they still make them.

I’ve never liked metal woods but Taylor Made or Calloway would probably be at the top of my choice. I can’t recall what metal woods I have.

You are wrong and you are right. Yes Ping clubs come in different lie angles for different height people, however those lie angles can be adjusted, so you can buy a lie angle set of clubs that don't match you and have them adjusted to fit you. I did exactly that with a set of clubs that I got a good used deal on and then used model car paint to change the color of the dots to match the lie angle that they were adjusted to... So my statement still stands.

Find a good set of pings. G10 G15 G20 any of these are good . Easy to hit, and go far. Also some of the Callaway irons are good. Big bertha, x12, x16 are good
I have played a lot of irons and am playing some Ole discontinued Nickent irons. I hit them better than any I have played except maybe some older pings.
I think having the right shafts is the most important thing. I am using senior shafts now. Just switched to them and I am hitting the ball as far as I ever have.
