Pretty sure the tour driving averages only count if they hit a fairway. That wasn't part of our discussion, right? Along that line, we should only count carry distance and forget about roll. I also didn't take into consideration any club but my driver. That definitely skews things.
The PGA measures average driving distance using this formula: "The average number of yards per measured drive. These drives are measured on two holes per round. Care is taken to select two holes which face in opposite directions to counteract the effect of wind. Drives are measured to the point at which they come to rest regardless of whether they are in the fairway or not."
It's my understanding that they attempt to select fairly obvious driver holes as well.
